Description
BENJAMIN e. EITZHUGII, 0E FREDERICK, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN SCRUBBING-BRUSHES.
Speciication forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,674, dated September 24, 1872.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN G. FITZ- HUGH, of the city and county of Frederick and State of Maryland, have invented a new and 'useful Improvement in Scrubbing-Brushes, of which the following is a speciiication:
My invention relates to scrubbing-brushes having an India-rubber scrubbing-surface; and my said invention consists in combining a tubular rubber-scrubber with an interior clamping-bar and a locking device, in a manner to allow the said tubular rubber, when onevside is worn out, to be turned upon its `clamping-bar to present new scrubbing-surperspective views of the separate parts detached.
The end of a handle, a, passes into a socket, b, formed on a cross-piece, c, the ends of which are slotted, as shown at d and d. This cross-piece c is curved longitudinally, so as to form a shield for and conform to the shape of an India-rubber tube, e, which is' held against the concave under side of the piece c, by `means of a metal bar, f, the ends of which are provided with holes y, into which holes the ends of a spring-rod `or bow, h, are hooked, which spring-rod, being passed over a pin or knob, fi, on the handle, holds all the parts irmly to each other, the bar f holding the tube e against supporting-shield o, and the springrod h holding the bar f and pieces c with its socket b to the handles.
If one portion of the tube e has been used up by scrubbing, the spring-rod h is released from the knob i on the handle, thereby releasing the pressureof the bar j' against the tube e and piece c. The tube e can now be freely revolved to bring a fresh portion of its surface in position to serve as a scrubbing-surface, and the parts fixed firmly in place again by replacing the spring-rod over the knob e' on the handle. Y
If it is desired to replace the used-up tube e by a new one, the spring-rod h is released from the knob i, the piece c moved endwise, the larger slot d permitting the other slot to free itself from the rod h, whereby the piece c, with the handle, can be removed from the other parts. the bar f, and the bar removed from the tube and slipped into4 the new tube, and the parts put together, as already described. The space between the .lower end of the tube e and the under side of the bar f allows a certain elastic play to the scrubbing portion of the surface of the tube, thereby enabling it to adapt itself to the inequalities of the surface to be scrubbed, and thereby doing better execution.
If one portion of the scrubbing-surface is used up a new one can be presented in a moment and without any trouble.
Having described my invention, I claimf l. A tubular .rubber-scrubber, in combina- -tion With the interior clamping-bar and the locking device, to allow the tubular rubber to be turned when one side is worn out, to present a new unworn side for use, as described.
2. rlhe combination ofthe India-rubber tube e, bar f, spring-rod h, slotted cross-piece c with its socket b, and handle a provided with a knob, i, all arranged to operate as av scrub'4 bmg-brush, essentially as described.
The above specification of my improvement in scrubbing-brushes signed this 16th day of November, 1871.
