LOCK-HINGE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,850, dated September 28, 1886.

Application filed January 21, 1886. Serial No. 189,248.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MICHAEL G. KUHN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lock-Hinges, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved shutter lock-hinge, by which the shutter is reliably locked when in open position.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of two shutters with my improved lock-hinge, showing the same respectively in position for locking the shutterin open position and in position when the shutter is released. Fig. 2 is a front view of my improved lock-hinge, drawn on a larger scale; and Fig. 3 a side elevation,with a part broken away and shown as applied to a shutter.

Referring to the drawings, A represents my improved locking-lever, which is made in the shape of an L-shaped hook, and provided at the angle of the hook with a laterally-bent thumbpiece, a, by which the said lever can bereadilytaken hold of for placing itin locked or unlocked position. The opposite end of the lever or fastener A is pivoted either to a forwardlyextending ear, I), of the supporting-plate B of the lower liingepintle, C, or to the pintle-socket G, as desired. The supporting-plate B is screwed or otherwise attached to the wall in the usual manner. The ear I) is either made integral with the supporting-plate B or riveted thereto, as desired. The rear die of the fastener A, back of the pivot connection with the ear I), is made straight, as shown at D, Fig. 3, and provided withenlarged and rounded-off side portions, (1. (Shown in Fig. 3.) The free end of atensionspring, D, that is riveted at one end to the supporting-plate B, presses against the straight rear edges of the fastener A at or against the enlarged side portions or heels, d, of the same, according as the fastener is placed in a position for locking or releasing the shutter. The locking lever or fastener A is made long enough, so that its upwardly extending part will engage the hinge-strap E, that is attached to the shutter and hinged to the pintle O. \Vhen the shutter is opened, the fastener A is thrown in upward position by taking hold of the thumbpiece a, so that its upwardly extending arm engages the horizontal part of the hinge-strap E, as shown on the left side of Fig. 1, and in Fig. 3. The fastenerAis held in this position by the spring D, so that the shutter is locked in open position without being released by the action of the wind on the shutter. \Vhen the shutter is to be closed, the fastener is lowered by taking hold of the thumb-piece a, so that the fastener clears the hinge-strap E, the fastener being retained in lowered position by the pressure of the spring D against the enlarged heel d.

The hinge is furnished with the fastening device, which adds but little to the expense of the same. and forms a simple device for looking the shutter in open position, so as to retain it even when the shutter is exposed to heavy storms.

Having thus described my invention,l. claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with the pintle member of a lock-hinge provided with a forwardly-extending ear, of a locking lever or fastener pivoted to said ear and adapted to swing in a plane at a right angle to the face of the shutter, and to engage the inner edge of the shutter, said fastener being provided at its pivot end with a straight rear edge and with laterally-extending heels, and with a thumb-piece at its front end, and a tension-spring applied to said pintle member and adapted to bear against said pivot end, substantially as described.
