To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LEGRAND F. BROWN and JAMES F. CHAPBELL, citizens of the United States, residing at Mobile, in the county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shutter Hinges and Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a fastener or latch for holding a window blind or shutter or like closure in open position.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, effective and reliable device of this character which will prevent an open shutter from slamming or being accidentally blown closed, which will automatically fasten the shutter when the latter is thrown open, and which may be easily retracted to release the shutter and permit the latter to be closed.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts fully described, illustrated and claimed, references being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a view looking toward the outer side of a closed shutter or blind and showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation showing the shutter, illustrated in section, fastened in open position by the latch. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the latch hook. Fig. 4 is a view of a modified form of the invention.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates a portion of a building structure, to which is secured a bracket plate 2 carrying an outwardly extending arm 3 on which is formed or provided a pintle 4. This pintle is engaged by a knuckle or sleeve 5 on one end of a metallic strap 6 secured at its opposite end to the outer face of the blind or shutter 7, thus forming one of the hinge connections between the blind and frame structure on which said blind is adapted to swing from an open to a closed position, and vice versa. The respective ends 8 and 9 of the strap above referred to are offset to extend in parallel planes by a right angular connecting portion 10, whereby the blind is adapted to close within the plane of the outer surface of the building structure, as shown in Fig. 1 and to swing outward to an open position parallel with said structure, as shown in Fig. 2.
Projecting forwardly from the plate 2 is a strap flange or plate 11 having a vertical front edge 12 against which the portion 8 of the strap bears when the shutter is open to limit the opening movement thereof. This stop plate is also formed with an upwardly inclined supporting surface 13. A latch 14 is formed with spaced cars 15 which straddle the plate 11 and are pivotally connected thereto by a pin 16. The end also has a cam edge 21. The cars 15 are connected by a bridge piece 22 adapted to engage the inclined edge 13 to hold the latch from tilting downward below a prescribed position.
The inclined surface 13 is adapted to be engaged by the bridge piece 22 to limit the downward movement of the latch, and to maintain said latch at an angle to the horizontal so that its cam surface will be disposed in a proper normal operative position.
l/Vhen the shutter is swung open the portion 8 of the strap 6 engages the cam face 21 of the latch, which rides up on said portion 8 and over the upper edge thereof, whereby the latch is tilted so that the hook 20 is elevated to project over and beyond said upper edge of the part 8 and then drops by gravity against the outer face of said part. By this means the shutter will be automatically clamped securely in open position against the edge 12 of the plate 11 and parallel with the outer side of the structure so that it cannot he accidentally released. Upon, however, pressing upward upon the finger piece 19 the latch may be tilted out of engagement with the hinge strap to permit the shutter to be swung to closed position.
Instead of the latch being arranged to work above and engage the upper edge of the portion 8 of the strap 6 it may be arranged to work below and engage the lower edge of said portion 8, as shown in Fig. 4, in which event a spring 23 is employed in lieu of the action of gravity to hold the latch in engaging position and permit a releasing movement thereof.
