GRAVITY GATE-LATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J uly 11, 1916.
Application filed December 7, 1912. Serial No. 735,473.
a gate latch of the gravity type, the latch proper being stamped from a single sheet of material consequently reducing the cost of the manufacture of same.
Another object of my invention is to provide a gate latch of the foregoing type while simple in construction, and very efiicient in operation.
A further object of my invention is to provide a gate latch which as set forth above may be stamped from a single sheet of material, the material being bent to form a handle portion whereby the latch may be operated.
A further object of my invention is to provide a gate latch of the foregoing nature which is operated automatically through the action of gravity, the latch in itself, being very light, due to its construction thus re ducing its cost to a material extent yet at the same time providing an efficient latch.
With the above objects in view, my invention relates to such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and specifically set forth in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in details, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which;
Figure 1, is a side elevation of my improved latch showing the same attached to a gate of the ordinary type. Fig. 2-, is a perspective View of the improved latch member.
In the accompanying drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my 'invention the numeral 10 designates an ordinary gate upon which my invention has been disposed. I do not limit myself to this form of gate, however it will be appreciated that my invention may be used in connection with other gates if occasion should require. I still do not limit myself to its specific application upon a gate of any form for the device may be used upon the gate post if it is desired.
My invention consists essentially in an arm 11 formed of sheet metal or the like, this arm having its forward extremity formed into a wedge-shaped extension 12 the latter having slanting faces 13 as is obvious. An opening 11 is formed in the extension 13, this opening being extended at the points 15 and having disposed therethrough, a pin 16, carried upon a gate post, the pin being seated in the extensions 15 at different times.
The forward end of the extension 13, is bent upwardly to extend at right angles thereto as shown at 17, this portion being reduced to form a curved handle portion 18 its forwarding end being bent as shown at 19 to lie parallel to the rear portion of the arm 11. The portion 19 of the device is secured to the arm through the medium of a rivet 2O consequently holding the different parts in rigid relation with each other.
The mode of attaching the device to the swinging part or gate or gate-post, door or door jamb, or fixed part, may be varied to a great extent. In the drawings however, I have shown my invention applied upon a gate-post, for purpose of holding the gate in a closed position. For the purpose of attaching the device to the gate-post, I have provided therein, openings 21 through which extends a screw pintle 22. When in place the section 19 is substantially parallel with the edge of the post, and in close proximity thereto so that the lower portion of the latch projects beyond the inner face thereof as is shown.
When the gate is to be opened, the operator may grasp the portion 18 so as to lock the latch upon its pivot and consequently allow free movement of the same. lVhen the gate is closed however, the edge thereof will engage one of the slanting portions 17 of the latch consequently throwing the same off the center and allowing it to drop back into place after the gate is shut.
From the foregoing it is thought that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily appreciated.
Such changes as are permissible by the subjoined claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is V 1. In combination, a fixed anda swinging part, and a locking member comprising a strap of metal bent upon itselfand having j its ends connected, means pivotally hanging I sald member onsaid fixed part at its connected ends,an intermediate portion 'of the strap being extended laterally to engage the swinging part to hold the same against opening movement, substantially as descrlbed.
'2. In combination, a fixed and a swinging part, and a locking member comprising a strap of metal'bent upon itself and having its ends connected, means pivotally suspend V ing said member upon said fixed parts at its connected "ends, an intermediate portion-of said strap being extended laterally to engage the swinging part and hold the same .against opening movement, and another intermediate portion of said strap being extended outwardly and inclinedfor engagement with the swinging part to shift said member laterally when the swinging part is being moved into a closed position, substanitially as described.
In a'device of the character described,
' the combination with a gate, and a gate post,
of an arm pivoted upon said gate post, said ,arm having a substantially wedge-shaped extension extension provided thereon, said extension provided with an opening, a pin disposed upon said gate post and projecting through said opening, and a'handle portion formed 'integral with the said extensiomas and for the purpose set forth and described. 7 4. In a device of the character described,
the'eombination with a pivoted and stationary support, of an arm pivoted upon said pivoted support, ,a pin disposed upon said form a handle portion, the forward end of 1 Copiesof this patent may be obtained for iment with the swinging ing extended mounting to form a handle, substantially as described.
said handle portion being secured to sail arm as and for the purpose set forth and described. 7
5. In a device of the character described, the combination with a gate and gate post, of an arm secured to said gate, said arm having a substantially wedge-shaped extension formed at one end thereof a pin carried by said gate post, said extension provided with an opening for the reception of said pin, said opening being extended at different points for the reception of said pin the outer extremity of said extension being bent upwardly, the upper extremity of said upstanding portion being constricted and curved to form a handle portion, a portion of said handle portion lying parallel with said arm and secured thereto as and for the purpose set forth and described.
In combination, a fixed and a swinging part, and a locking member comprising a strap of metal bent upon itself, means pivotally connecting the end of said strap to the fixed part, an intermediate portion of the strap being extended laterally to engage the swinging part to hold the same against opening movement, substantially as described.
7. In combination, a fixed and a swinging part and a locking member comprising a flat strip of metal pivoted to the fixed part and extending downwardly in flat abutting relation thereagainst, a fiat portion of the strip being extended laterally to overlap the swinging part to hold the same against opening movement, and a portion of the strip being extended outwardly substantially horizontally and being inclined for engagepart on closing movement thereof to shift the locking member laterally, the remainder of the strip beupwardly toward its pivotal ANDREW J. EVERETT. Witnesses LYON F RAsER, M. A. CRAIG.
