UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS B. PRAHAR, OF BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR TO GUSTAV HEILES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED BUTTON-HOOK AND COAT AND HAT HANGER.
Application filed NovemherlB. 1885. Serial No. 183,205.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS B. PRAHAR, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful ImprovementinaOombined Button-Hook and Coat and Hat Hanger, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improvement, illustrating its use. Fig. 2 is aside elevation of the improvement, shown full size 1 and in position for use. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same, shown closed for carriage. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the same in position for use, and showing a modification of the arrangement of the parts. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the same, shown closed for carnage.
The object of this invention is to improve the construction ofthe combined button-hooks and coat-hangers for which Letters Patent No. 315,500 were granted to Gustav Heiles, April 14, 1885, in such a manner as to make them neater in appearance, less expensive in manufacture, and more convenient and reliable in use.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts of the combined button-hooks and coat and hat hanger, as will be hereinafter fully described, and then claimed.
A represents an ordinary button-hook, in the shank of which is formed a slot, B, and a recess, O. In the slot B is pivoted an arm,
D, in such a manner that it can be opened out into a position nearly at right angles with the shank of the button -hook A, when its opening out will be limited by the rear edge of ,its pivoted end coming in contact with the bottom of the said slot B. Upon the pivoted end of the arm D is formed a prong, E, pro- @EGIFKQATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,788, dated March 9, 1886.
(No model.)
jecting in the opposite direction from and 5 nearly parallel with the said arm. Upon the forward side of the outer end of the arm Dis formed a point, F, which, when the arm I) is closed, enters the recess 0, so as to keep the said arm D'in place. 0
If desired. a recess, G, can be formed in the forward edge of the middle part of the arm D for convenience in taking hold of the said arm, when closed, to open it.
In using the improvement the arm D is opened into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the prong E is forced into a post or wall. A coat can then be hung upon the but ton-hook A, and a hat hung upon the arm D, as illustrated in Fig. l, the weight of the coat tending to draw the prong E more firmly into the post or wall.
When the improvement is not in use, the arm D is closed down against the shank of the button-hook, the point F entering the recess O and keeping the said arm in place.
In Figs. 4 and 5 the position of the arm D is reversed, the said arm being pivoted to the middle part of the shank of the button-hook, and shutting down toward the rear end of the said shank.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Ina combined button-hook and coat and hat hanger, the combination, with the shank of a button-hook having slot B and recess 0, of the arm D, pivoted in the slot B, having prong E upon its pivoted end and projectingin the opposite direction from and nearly parallel with the said arm, and having a point, F, upon its outer end to engage with the recess of the said shank, substantially as herein shown and described.
LOUIS B. PRAHAR. \Vitnesses:
J AMES '1. GRAHAM, O. SEDGWIOK.
