UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DEMON R. GOULD AND PHILANDER BALDWIN, OF CHESTERTOVVN, N. Y.
I coFFlN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 347,172, dated August l0, 1886 Application filed Juno 2l, 1886.
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that we, DEMON R. GoULD and PHILANDER BALDWIN, citizens of the United States, residing at Ohestertown, in the county of Warren and VState `of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cofiins, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the'accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in coiins or burial-Gaskets; and it has for its objects to provide a coffin or casket that may be constructed in sections which may be securely and conveniently fastened together without screws or bolts, and to'provide certain other improvements in the details of the construction, as will more fully hereinafter appear. ,y
The above-mentioned objects we attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical sectional view of a eoflin or casket embodying our invention; Fig. 2, a transverse vertical sectional view taken on the line x x of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a similar view taken on the line y y of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a detached view in perspective, showing the means ofconnecting and fastening the sides and ends of the coffin or casket together; Fig. 5, a view of one of the coffin-lids detached, and Fig. 6 a similar view of the other lid of the coffin or casket.
The letter A indicates the sides of the coflin, which are cast in one piece, .with a central counecting cross-bar, B, at the bottom, and with iianges C D at the upper and lower edges, respectively.
E indicatesthe ends of the Cornu, whicn may be polygonal or rounded, and which are likewise cast with iianges at the upper and lower edges corresponding to those of the sides before mentioned.` The vertical edges of the ends are formed with oblique Iianges F,which are cut away slightly at their lower ends, as indicated by the letter G. The said iianges, at suitable intervals, are provided with slots H,and the adjacent portions of the ends of the sides with interlocking keys or projections I, which may be passed through the slots, and by a slight downward movement of the ends of the cotlin or casket caused to lock the said sides Serial No. 205,795. (No model.)
and ends securely together. It is obvious that these parts may be reversed-that is, the iianges may be `formed on the sides and the keys on the ends of the casket or coffin-'with- -out changing the character of our invention.
The letter K indicates a metallic plate of the general contour of theinterior of the coffin or casket, which rests, when in place, upon the lower flanges of the sides and ends, and upon the central cross-bar,being supported thereby. The said plate is soldered or otherwise securely fastened tothe flanges, and forms an inner air-tight bottom to the coffin or casket. To thelower sides of the lower iianges is secured, by means of screws or otherwise, a bottom of wood or other material, as indicated by the letter L.
The letter M indicates the top or cover of the casket or coffin, vwhich is cast with dependent iianges N, which overset the upper edges of said casket or coffin. The said top or cover is secured by means of screws, in the usual manner;
The sides, ends, and top of the coffin or casket are composed of open recessed frames, which are paneled with glass, metal, or other -materiaL to give the same an ornamental ap pearance, the panels in the top in all cases being preferably made of glass, in order that thecorpse may be viewed after Vthe coffin or casket has 'been hermetically closed. panel over the head or upper end ofthe coffin or casket is arranged to slide in ways P, which areformed by recessing the under side of the top 'or cover, and securing below the panel a wooden frame, R, by means of screws S, a packing of rubber, T, being interposed. This packing permits the panel to be clamped hermeti'cally in position,when closed,by tightening up the screws S.
The letter U indicates two paneled frames, which are iianged and recessed on their lower sides, so as to t over the paneled openings in the top orV cover, in order to finally close up the coitln or casket, the said frames U being provided with locking-buttons V, by means of which they may be locked andrconiined to their seats.
The permanent panels are all cemented to their seats from the inside, lso as to render the coffin or casket air-tight, and the joints at the The IOO
2. The combination of the side sections eon- 15 nected by a transverse bar, the end sections and interlocking ilanges and keys, and the inner bottom, mutually held together, as described, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof We affix onrsignntures 2o in presence of two Witnesses.
