UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. NOBLE, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN BURlAL-CASKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 208,329, dated September 24, 1878; application filed August 6, 1878.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM JAMEs No- BLE, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Burial Gasket, of which the following is a specification In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a top view of a casket to which my improvement has been applied, part of the cover being removed to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section of the same. Fig. 4 is a part of the section shown in Fig. 2, enlarged. Fig. 5 is a part of the section shown in Fig. 3, enlarged.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of the invention is to furnish for coffins a novel catch that will engage with the latch of the sliding cover, as hereinafter fully described.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
A represents the body of the casket, and B represents its cover. The head panel'of the cover B is made detachable to allow the head part of the corpse to be exposed when desired. To the inner sides of the side bars of the cover B are attached cleats O, to form a way in which the frame D may he slid back and forth beneath and parallel with the top of the said cover B. In the frame D is secured a glass plate, E. To the head-bar of the frame D is secured a metallic frame or box, F, which, for convenience in manufacture, maybe made in the form of two plates, the lower one being bent four times at rightangles to form the cavity, and the upper one being made straight.
G is a pin, which passes down through holes in the centers of the top and bottom of the box F, and to which within the cavity of the said box F is attached a latch, H, which is made with a shoulder upon each end, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. To the middle part of the cover B is attached a latch, I, and to the head part of the body A or cover B is attached another catch, I, which catches I are so formed as to engage with the latch H when the frame and glasses D E are slid forward to cover the head part of the casket, or slid back to uncover the said head part.
J is a spiral spring placed upon the lower part of the pin Gr, between the latch H and the bottom of the box F, to hold the said latch H up, so that it will engage automatically with one or the other of the said catches I as the frame D is slid forward or back. The latch H can only be released from the catches I by pressing the pin G downward. The latch H is represented in the drawings as operating vertically; but it may be arranged to operate laterally, if desired.
I am aware that face-glasses have been set in frames and arranged to slide back beneath the cover. This I do not claim, broadly; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination, with the sliding frame and glass D E, of the pin G, the latch H, the catches I I, and the spiral spring J, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
WILLIAM J AS. NOBLE.
Witnesses JAMES T. GRAHAM, J. H. SCARBOROUGH.
