T on whom it may concern.- Be it known that we, CHRISTIAN H. GEORGE- SON and WiLLIAM KONRAD, citizens of the United States, residing at the city of Oshkosh,

in the county of Winnebago and State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burial-Cases; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to theletters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Our invention relates to improvements in sectional panels or face lids for burial caskets, and it consists, first, in constructing the face panel in three transverse hinged sections, one of the sections being hinged to the cove so that when openedthe sections will fold toward the head of the burial case and form an approximately horizontal elevated wreath support, a brace for the same and an approximately vertical motto support; and it consists, secondly, in constructing the panel or face lid in two transverse parts, one of which is formed of a single section and adapted to be folded back to form a lower motto support and the other part formed in three sections which are adapted to be folded toward the head of the burial case to form an elevated flower support and brace therefor and an approximately vertical motto support.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view showing the panel or face lid in three sections and closed. Fig. 2 isa side elevation, showing the panel or face lid open, and the three sections folded back to form an elevated flower support and brace therefor and an approximately vertical motto support. Fig. 3 is an end view of the foot of the casket showing the motto support at the head of the same, and Fig. 4 is a side view, showing the panel or face lid constructed in two parts, one of which is adapted to be folded back to form alower motto support and the sections of the other part to be folded in the manner shown in Fig. 2.

A is the shell, B the cove of the casket, and C, D, E, the sections which compose the part X and F the other part of the face lid or panel of the burial case, the section 0 being hinged to the cove by the hinges o c, and the sections D E being hinged to their adjoining sections by the hinges d d d d. When the sections 0, D, E, are raised and folded back, the lid is in the position shown in Fig. 2, the section D forming a raised horizontal shelf or bracket which is supported by the sections E and G, which former rests upon the cove of the case and serves as a brace, and the section 0 forming a vertical motto support as shown in Fig. 3. Upon the shelf or bracket D maybe placed a wreath G or any other suitable orna1nentation.

By our invention it is not necessary to provide a projection upon the body of the casket for the support of the brace, as the brace rests upon the cove of the casket, and, by providing three sections instead of two, they are of such length that when they are elevated the Whole bracket will fall approximately within or be on a vertical plane with the head of the casket so as not to interfere with the passage of people around the head of the casket, and render the general appearance of the casket unsightly. We regard this feature as necessary for the successful operation of the device, and, in case in some kinds of caskets the face panel should be of such length thata division in complete sections would not bring the whole bracket approximately in the lino of'the head of the casket, the panel may be divided into two transverse parts as shown in Fig. 4, one of the parts F being formed of a single section F and hinged separately to the lid below, and the other part X formed of the sections O,D,E, as heretofore described. By this latter construction we provide a lower motto support which may be held at an incline by stop hinges when opened. We also regard the elevation of the wreath support as a great improvement over those heretofore lid is opened or at an incline accordingly as the lengths of the sections are varied.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In combination with a burial case,a face lid or panel composed of three transverse sections 0, D and E hinged to each other and the section 0 hinged to the cove of the case so that when opened and folded back the panel will form an elevated flower support B, an approximately vertical motto support 0 and a brace E for the flower support, all approximately within or on a vertical plane with the head of the case, substantially as described.

In combination with a burial case, a face lid or panel formed of two transverse parts, one of the parts having a single section F which is hinged to the lower part of the lid and the other part comprising sections 0, D, E, which are hinged to each other and the section E hinged to the cove at the head of CHRISTIAN I-I.
