A. E. WHITNEY. BRACKET FOR GOFFINS No. 504,000. Patented Au 20,1003."
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT E. WHITNEY, OF MUN CIE, INDIANA.
BRACKET FOR COFFINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,009, dated August 29, 1893.
Application filed November 12, 1892. Serial N0.451,809. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT E. WHITNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muncie, in the county of Delaware and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wreath Attachments for Coffins or Caskets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in wreath rests for coffins and caskets and consists in certain novelty in the construction and arrangement of the same and the means employed for attaching it to the coffin or casket, all of which I will now proceed to point out and describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan of a cofiin with the head cap removed, showing the position of the rest when closed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the head of a coflin showing the wreath rest closed and the cap on; Fig. 3 a similar section showing the cap, removed and the rest opened in position to be used.
Referring to said drawings-A indicates the body of a coflin or casket; B the glass cover at the head; 0 a suitable molding at the head; D the wreath rest which consists of a flat board of any desired outline, but arranged to fit within the molding and rest when closed upon the glass. Said rest is hinged at one end to the molding O by hinges d, or staples, so that it may be removed if necessary.
E is the cover shown in Fig. 2 when the wreath rest and coffin is closed.
In Fig. 3 Ishow the cover removed and the wreath rest D open in position to support a wreath, or other floral design or such emblem as may be desired to be placed thereon.
F is a wire support which is stapled or hinged to the wreath rest. When not in use it rests in a depression in said rest so that the cap of the casket or coffin will not interfere with the same. This rest in no wise interferes with the ordinary arrangement of the glass.
and caps ordinarily used. It is made of a thin board suitably ornamented, as described and shown. It will be seen that it can be used at the proper time and then closed as shown and the cap placed upon the casket or coffin.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure b Letters Patent, is-
A wreath rest for coffins or caskets consisting of a fiat board or plate, hinged at one end within and to the frame of the coffin above the glass head plate, and resting when closed below the cap or cover, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT E. WHITNEY. Witnesses:
0. W. SAMPLE, T. F. ROSE.
