MARKING-BRAND.

Specification of Letters Patent No.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, B. B. HILL, of Chicopee, county of Hampden, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Marking- Brands; and I do hereby declare that the same is described and represented in the following specification and drawing, and to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my said improvement I will proceed to describe its construction, and referring to the drawings, in which the same letters indicate like parts in each of the figures.

The nature of this improvement consists in making the letters with a square holding flange on each side of its base and in making the case open only on the side and edge for the purpose of receiving the letters and also in making a square lip on the inner edge of the side ofthe case, and making a corresponding lip on the cap, which forms one side of the case, and arranging an adjustable follower, which, with the letters, are held firmly in place and adjusted, or secured by appropriate screws in the said case.

In the accompanying drawings a, are the letters.

6, are the square holding flanges.

c, is the case, which is made open only on the side and edge or face.

(Z, is a square lip on the inner edge of the side of the case, and on the edge of the cap of the case.

6, is the cap of the case.

9, is the follower, or base which supports the letters.

72,, is the shank or handle, by which the brand is used.

z, is a screw on the end of the shank or 38,868, dated December 3, 1861.

handle, for the purpose of adjusting the letters, and holding them up against the square flanges b, b acting against the underside of the intermediate follower g.

j, is the hub of the case, into, and through which the screw 2' of the handle 72. is fitted.

7c, are bosses, on each end of the case a, into which the screws Z, are fitted for the purpose of holding the cap 6, firmly to its place.

Now by making the letters a, with a square flange Z), I am enabled, both to adjust and hold them (the letters) firmly in place against the lips (Z, of the cap, and case 6, 0, and also to bring the face of the letters in atrue and straight line, in reading for use, and by inserting the letters into the case from the side, I am enabled to secure strength to the case, and thick bosses, into which to fit, and give a strong hold to the screws Z, that hold the side cap to the case.

The object of this improvement is to produce a cheap, durable, and useful article for branding various articles.

I believe I have shown the nature, object and advantage to be derived from this improvement, to enable a person skilled to make and use the same.

I claim as a new article of manufacture A marking brand. A case 0, open on one side to receive the letters a, for the purpose of providing proper flanges (Z, for holding the letters, and bosses 70 for securing the cap 6 with the letters in place, substantially as and for the purpose described.
