BRIDLE BIT. V
Patented Mar. 9, 1 886.
Wimsms UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT G. HANFORD, JR., OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE HANFORD, PEGKHAM 8t MOGANCE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
lBRlDLE-BIT.
EPECIE'ICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,578, dated March 9, 1886.
(No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, ROBERT G. HANEORD. Jr., of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bits, of which the following is a specification. I
My improvement relates to bits such as are used for horses and other animals.
I will describe in detail a bit embodying [o myimproven1ent,and then point out the novel features in claims.
The accompanying drawing is a longitudinal section of a bit embodying my improvement.
A designates the cheeks or rings of the bit. They may be of any desired shape. As here shown, they consistofringlike portions or, having portions b extending crosswise thereof at about the diameter of the rings. The por- 2c tions provided with loops, to which cheekstraps may be secured, extend upwardly from the rings A, and bar-like portions provided with apertures, to which the reins may be secured, extend downwardly from said rings.
The portions 12 have, as here shown, cylindrical portions 0, extending loosely through apertures in heads (1 d of the bar or mouthpiece B of the bit. The heads d d of the bit are connected together by a cross-bane, of
0 less diameter than said heads. The heads d may be cast with the cross-bar, if desirable, while the other, d, is free to be secured to and removed from the cross-bar, preferably by means oi'screw-threads. About the cross- 5 bare ot' the bitI secure paper, 0. The paper may be secured about said cross-bar by compression, ifdesirable; butl prefer to cut rings or washersf, of paper, of suitable thickness and diameter, and place them, one after the 4o other, upon the cross-bar until the latter is full. They are then tightly pressed together upon the cross-bar, after which the head d may bescrewed orotheiwise secured upon the free end of the cross-bar.
The paper from which the washersf are 5 composed is treated with chloride of zinc. This may be incorporated with the paper, either during the process of manufacture of the latter and before it is made into washers, or'the washers, after being made, may be treated with the chloride of zinc, preferably in the form of a solution, which will be absorbed by the paper.
A bit having a mouth piece covered with paper which has been treated with chloride of zinc is advantageous, because the paper presents a smooth pleasant surface, which will not pinch or skin a horses mouth in cold weather, while the chloride of zinc acts medicinally upon sore and tender mouths, heal- 6c ing and strengthening them. Paper washers are also very durable and cheap.
Bits embodying my improvement may be made of two sections havinga hinge-like connection at the middle of the length of the bit. The sections will have at the meeting ends shoulders against which the paper wit; be pressed.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A bit provided with a mouth-piece coveredwith paper treated with chloride of zinc, substantially as specified.
2. A bit provided with a mouth-piece covered with paper rings or washers treated with chloride of zinc, substantially as specified.
