BACK-BAND HOOK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 330,900, dated November 24, 1885.

Be it known that we, HENRY G. J oHNsoN and J ESSE B. Moons, citizens of the United States, residing at El Dorado, in the county of Union and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Backband Hooks; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Our invention relates to back-band hooks, its construction being hereinafter fully described.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of our invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same on the line :0 x of Fig. 1, with the pin closed. Fig. 3 is a cross'sectional view of the same on the line 3/ y, which view also shows a section of the back-band and the manner of passing it over the pin 4 and through the slot 3 in the plate 1.

In the construction of our buckle we use any material that affords strength enough to bear the strain that is usually put on hooks of this class. We make a hooked and slotted plate, 1, the hook 2 being on the front end, and a slot, 3, in the rear part. Said slot is made large enough to allow a strap or back-band, 6, to easily pass through when doubled. In the loop thus formed is slipped a headed pin, 4. Said pinis made to work in an eye, 5, secured on the upper face of the plate 1 by a bolt or nut, 7, screwing on the threaded neck of said eye, which passes through the plate 1, said nut fitting in a depression on the bottom of said plate, that the bottom may have no projection, but be perfectly even; or said eye 5 may be simply screwed into the plate 1; or said eye may be secured in place in any suitable manner. The heads on the pin 4 are for the purpose of keeping the said pin from slipping out of the eye 5. Thus we always have the said pin handy. There is no chance for it to get lost and cause a delay while another is being procured or the lost one found.

On using our hook we simply loop the strap or trace We want to hook, slip the headed pin in the loop, adjust the hook 2, and fasten the loose end of the trace. The power applied to the back-band or strap will cause the pin 4 to clasp the strap or back-band between itselfand the plate 1. Thus the afore power applied to the back-band the greater will be the pressure of the pin. on the plate, and in this manner the back-band will be kept from slipping.

We see from the above that our invention is thoroughly practicable, adapted to any use to which a back-band hook may be applied, quickly and easily attached or removed. WVe

also propose using the slotted and hooked plate 1 and pin 4 without the eye 5.

Having described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A back-band hook consisting of the plate 1, having book 2 on its front part and slot 3 in the rear part, eye 5. swiveled on the upper face of plate 1 and fastened by means of nut 7 or other equivalent means, and headed pin 4, adapted to work in said eye, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. The combination of the plate 1, having hook 2,slot 3, with backhand 6,1ooped through said slot, and headed pin 4, passing through the loop of said back-band, substantially as shown and described.

3. A backhand hook consisting of the plate 1, having hook 2 on its front part and slot 3 in the rear part, eye 5, secured on the upper face of plate 1, and headed pin 4, adapted to work in said eye, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
