Description

D. GORNING & R. J. STAOKHOUSE.
NAIL EXTRAOTOR- No. 328,655. Patented Oct. 20, 1885-.
O I 4 I p le; Attorney N. PEYERS Pheloumagnphur. Wilhi nnnnnn C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID CORN IN G AND RUSSELL J. STAOKHOUSE, OF DANBURY, CONN.
NAI L- EXTRACTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,655, dated October 20, 1885.
Application filed June 30, 1885. Serial No. 170,225. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, DAVID GORNING and RUssELL J. STACKHOUSE, citizens of the United States, residing at Danbury, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spike-Extractors; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specificati on.
This invention has relation to improvements in devices for extracting spikes; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as will be hereinafter fully explained, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate our invention, in which Figure 1 represents a side view of our device applied to a railroad-rail, and Fig. 2 is a detail view.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the bar or operatinglever, which consists of the hand portion a and a curved portion, 1), which latter is provided with two Vertical slots, 0 0, being narrower at their upper end than at their lower portion, and the side walls of these slots are transversely perforated, as at d d, to receive a bolt, 6 e, by which the gripping-bars f f are pivoted. These pivoted gripping-bars are provided with longitudinal grooves 9, having in wardly-turned flanges h h, which are designed to pass under the head of the spike, thus gripping the same, when the lever can be either raised or pressed down, as the case may be, thereby withdrawing said spike; and the operator can work the device from the inside of the track, which is of great advantage to the workman when at Work on bridges, culverts, and near platforms; also, either clutchbar, when not in use, serves as a fulcrum afterthe lever leaves the rail while the spike is being drawn.
It will be seen that our device presents a double extractor, the clutch-bars of which can be used on either side of the rail without removing the lever therefrom, and the curved portion of the lever causes the spike to be raised or drawn vertically, thus preventing the same from being bent, which is an important feature of our device; at the same time it is cheap to manufacture and presents a powerful lifting device.
It is important to the practical working of our extractor that the slots 0 0 should be downwardly flaring, and that both gripping bars should be alike in size and shape.
Having described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The combination, in a spike-extractor, of a lever, A, having a hand portion, a, and a curved bearing-arc, b, for the rail-head, slotted as described, and the two gripping-bars f, pivoted in the slotsc c and located equidistant from and on opposite sides of the center of said curved portion, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures 7 5 in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID OORNING. RUSSELL J. STAOKHOUSE.
