PLANK FENCE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 487,573, dated December 6, 1892.

To all whom it may concern,.-

Be itknown that I, WARREN J OBE, Sr., a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Hawkins, in the county of lVood and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements in fences.

The object of the invention is to provide a cheap, simple, and effective portable fence; and it consists in the combination, with a supporting-post, of planks which are adapted to be clamped thereto and retained in place by means of blocks having bifurcated ends, said blocks being placed between the planks, so that the ends will embrace the same and force them against the sill and post. p

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fence constructed in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2 is an end elevation, partly in section.

A A designate a series of sillpieces to which the vertical posts are rigidly secured, and from these sill-pieces to near the upper ends of the posts and rigidly secured thereto are braces C, said braces being placed on opposite sides of the post, if desired.

D D designate the planks or rails of the fence, which are placed against one side of the post B, the lower plank or rail resting immediately upon the sill-piece A.

E designates a clamp, both ends of which are bifurcated to present open-ended slots e e, the lower slot being of greater depth than the other, and the furcated parts at the npper portion of the clamp are beveled, as shown at e.

In constructing the fence clamp E is placed over the lower rail of the fence, so that said rail will lie in the deeper slot in the clamp and the second rail placed in the other slot.

5o The upper rail of the fence is then placed in position, so that its upper edge will bear against the clutch at the junction of the brace C with the post. Another clamp E is now placed beneath the upper plank or rail and in engagement with the rail below and then forced to a nearly-vertical position, when it will press the lower rail in close contact with the upper edge of the sill-piece and the upper rail snugly into the crotch, thus retainingthe rails securely in position. To the upper ends of the posts may be secured a barbed wire, as shown.

A fence made as hereinbefore described is strong, easily constructed, and can be readily set up and taken down. It will be noted that the clamps E E are independent, though they act in conjunction with each other, and in practice one of the clamps may be adjacent to one of the sides of the posts, while the other may be close to the adjoining post.

Having thus described. my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a fence, the combination, with the support consisting of a sillpiece, vertical post, and inclined brace secured to the post and sill, of planks or rails located between the upper edge of the sill-piece and beneath the brace, and clamps E E, having the upper and lower ends thereof bifurcated for engagement with the upper and lower edges of adjacent planks or rails, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.

2. Thecombination,withthepostsA,having portions rigidly secured thereto against which the rails of the fence are adapted to abut, of rails arranged one above the other, as shown, and independentclamps having bifurcated ends, which are adapted to engage with different rails, so as to force them apart and in contact with the projecting portions secured to the post, for the purpose set forth.
