JOHN MERGENTHALER, OF HANCOCK COUNTY, OHIO.
RAILROAD TIE EXTRACTOR AND REPLACER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,829, dated May 12, 1885.
Application filed January 23, 1885.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN MERGENTHALER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the county of Hancock and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Tie Extractors and Replacers; and I do declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of my device applied to a track, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same removed from the track.
This invention has relation to machines for drawing out railroad ties from under the track -rails, and for inserting new ones in place thereof, and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, all as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, the letters A A designate the track-rails, and B a tie which is being drawn out by the machine.
0 is the extractor, consisting of the jawed bearing-bar-D, the beaked rack-bar E, which slides therein, the lever-link F, and the segment-gear lever G, which is pivoted to the lever-link.
The bearing-bar D is provided at its end with the rigid jaws h 71, usually inclined toward each other downward and adapted to engage one of the track-rails. The stem of the bar is smooth and forms a bearing on which the raclcbar slides, being connected to said bearing-bar by a strap or loop, Z. To the inner end of the bearing-bar is pivoted the lower end of the lever-link, F.
The rack-bar Elias its rack-teeihm uponits upper surface, and atitsouter end is provided the downwardly-tnrned catch tooth or beak K. At its inner end it is provided with a strap or loop aforesaid. The catch tooth or beak is provided with an offset tooth or prong, I, at its back for fastening purposes.
The lever-link extends outward, and is provided at its end with an operating-handle. To the middle portion of this link is (No model pivoted the gear-lever G, having atits lower end the segment-gear S, which is adapt-ed to engage the rack-bar when held down thereon by the lever-link.
The operation is as follows: In extracting a tie thejaw-bar D is connected to one of the rails of the track, and by means of the leverlink and foot the beak of the rack-bar,thelatter having been extended, is made to engage the tie. Then by operating the gear-lever the tie is forcibly moved in the direction of its length toward the rail to which the jaw-bar is connected. After the tie has been moved beyond the action of the beak K the jaw-bar is disengaged from the rail to which it is applied and is engaged with the opposite rail, the machine being turned end for end, and the pushingprong of the beak being engaged with the end of thetie, the latter is, by operating the gearlever, forced out from under the rail.
In introducing a tie under the rails the operation is as follows: The bed being provided for the tie, the latter is laid with its end in position, and the machine, engaging the rail under which the tie first moves, is operated to force the rail thereunder until the catch-bar cannot be further engaged with the tie from the first rail. Then the machine is shifted to the opposite rail and the operation finished by drawing the tie into place.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A tie-extractor, consisting of a jawed bearing bar, a beaked rack-bar sliding thereon, a lever-link pivoted to the rack-bar, and a segment-gear lever pivoted to the lever-link and ergaging the rack-bar, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the jawed bearing-bar, the lcver-link pivoted thereto, and the segment-gear lever pivoted to said leverlink, of the rack-bar connected to and sliding on the bearing-bar, and having at its end the downwardlyturned beak and the pushingprong, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I alifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN MEE-GENTHALER.
