D. D. LAVERY.
BRUSH AND BROOM HOLDER. No. 326,225. Patented Sept; 15, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DOMINIOK D. LAVERY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE T. GILES, OF SAME PLACE.
BRUSH AND BROOM HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,225, dated September 15, 1885. Application filed November 3, 1882. Renewed March 11, 1884. Again renewed March 5, 1885. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DOMINIOK D. LAVERY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, haveinvented Improvements in Brush and Broom Holders, of which the following is a specification, to wit:
My invention'relates to devices for hanging brooms or similar articles by their handles; and it consists in a device of peculiar construction, adapted to clutch and hold articles of varying sizes, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawings,in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device open to its fullest extent, and Fig. 2 is a simi lar view showing it in position for grasping smaller articles.
A represents a plate or casting provided at each end with holes a a, for attachment by nails or screws to the wall or any desired object. This plate is in its upper part formed with two slots, 1) b, which converge at their upper ends, and in the lower part with a central vertical slot, 1), as shown in the drawings.
B B represent two gripping-levers, formed with lugs 00 upon their inner sides, which are united by a pivot, c, which extends through the central slot, 1), and is headed upon its rear end. Below their pivotal point the levers B B are each formed with a gripping-jaw, B B, preferably concaved upon their inner faces and of the form shown, though manyother forms may be used with good results. The upper ends of the levers B B are provided on their rear sides with small projections d d, which pass through the oblique slots 7) b, and are also headed upon their inner ends.
It will be readily understood that the levers B B are free to slide vertically on the plate A, and that as they are raised their upper ends will be drawn together by the oblique converging slots b b and their lower ends correspondingly opened, while when lowered the reverse operation occurs.
When it is desired to suspend a broom, the end of its handle is pressed up under the gripping-jaws B B, raising the levers until the jaws are sufficiently far apart to admit the broom-handle, which then slips between the jaws, and is gripped by them with a pressure proportionate to the weight of the broom. To remove thebroom it is only necessary to raise it until the, jaws are as far apart as they will go, when it may be readily slipped from between them.
This device is very simple and inexpensive, neat in appearance, and exceedingly handy in use, adapting itself readily to the size of handle of many articles, such as brooms, Whisks, mops, dust-brushes, whips, and anything having a handle which may be gripped by the aws. g
I am aware that brush and broom holders consisting of obliquely-slotted plates supporting self-adjusting jaws, have been heretofore used, and therefore I do not claim the same, broadly; but,
Havingv thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a device for suspending brooms or similar articles, the plate A, having two converging slots, 1) b, and a vertical slot, 2), in combination with the pivoted levers B B, provided with grippingjaws B B upon oneend, headed lugs or projections 11 01 upon their opposite ends, and central lugs, c 0, connected by a pivot, c, the whole arranged to slide in the slots in the base-plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DOMINIOK D. LAVERY.
