SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 763,352, dated June 28, 1904.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM W. BARTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented a new and Improved Hand-Tool, of which the following is a full, clear. and exact description.

This invention relates to a hand-operated device especially useful in unscrewing or otherwise removing the caps or covers of jars, cans, and like receptacles and also useful as a wrench for various other purposes.

The device comprises, briefly stated, two jaw-like members having handles at one end and a chain or other means for adj ustably connecting together their opposite ends. Connected with the chain is a spike, which is employed in connection with the jaws for prying off covers or for various other purposes, as will suggest themselves during the practical use of the device.

This specification is an exact description of one example of my invention, while the claim defines the actual scope thereof.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective View of the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the invention in use, and Fig. 3 is a sectional View showing the invention in use.

The other group of teeth, (5, is relatively small and curved on a shorter radius, so as to adapt these parts of the jaws a to grip smaller articles, such as a pipe or nut. On the upper sides of the jaws a ledges a are formed or fastened thereto, and said ledges are each intended to serve as fulcrum on which to rock the spike (Z.

In using the invention the chain 6 should be adjusted until the jaws a properly engage the article which is to be operated upon, and then by grasping the handles a the jaws may be operated as desired. If the vessel-closure is not a threaded one, it may be first loosened by the application of the jaws a, and then by gripping the receptacle below the closure and placing the spike (Z on one of the ledges a the point of the spike may be engaged with the inclosure, and by nsing the spike as a lever said cover may be lifted from its seat. Various other operations may be performed with the tool, as will be apparent, and this adapts it to general household and domestic uses.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of the invention may be resorted to at will without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. Hence I consider myself entitled to all such variations as may lie within the intent of my claim.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A tool, comprising two jaws having handle portions at one end and each havinga raised portion or ledge intermediate its ends, a chain having its ends respectively connected with the ends of the jaws opposite the handle portions thereof, one of the jaws having a hook thereon with which the intermediate links of the chain are capable of intermediate connection, for the purpose specified, and a spike or prying-tool connected to the chain intermediate the ends thereof.
