SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 682,021, dated September 3, 1901.

Be itknown that LPAUL J oNEs BENNETT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oheneyville, in the parish of Rapides and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Nail-Grab, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to a device for pulling nails out of nail-kegs, and has for its object to provide a simple tool for enabling merchants to conveniently take out nails from a keg instead of doing it with their hands, as usual.

The invention will be fully described here inafter and the features of novelty-pointed out in the appended claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 isa side elevation of my improved nail-grab. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation thereof,substantially on the line 2 2 of Fig. l; and Fig 3 is a central cross-section with parts omitted, showing the prongs or claws in a different position.

The improved tool comprises a rod A, having a handle A at one end and a head A at the'other end. Upon this head are pivotally mounted at A at each side of the rod A, members B, each provided with three prongs or claws B in approximate registry with those of the other plate. Each of the members 13, further, has two arms B slotted lengthwise and arranged to cross each other, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The slots B receive pins 0' upon a plate or slide O,having guided movement upon the rod A. The pins 0 are located and adapted to move in a plane situated centrally between the pivots A With this slide are connected bars D, having at their upper ends a handle E, mounted to slide on the rod A. A spring F, coiled on said rod between the two handles A E, tends to throw the latter down, so as to swing the claws B open. (See Fig. 1.) To guide and limit the movement of the bars D, the rod A may carry a cross-pin A engaging slots D of the bars D.

It Will be readily understood that in use the thumb is held on the upper handle A, while the fingers grasp the lower or sliding handle E. The tool is then inserted in the nail-keg, and by pressing the handle E up the claws B are caused to close, as shown in Fig. 3, thus holding a number of nails, which may then be withdrawn from the keg with the tool and brought upon the table or counter. By releasing the handle E the claws B will be allowed to separate under the influence of the spring F, permitting the nails to drop.

Modifications as long as they remain within the scope of the claims will constitute no de= parture from the nature of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A nail-grab comprising a rod having a handle, claw-carrying members pivotally con nected with said rod and having crossed slotted arms, and a slide movable on said rod and having pins engaging the said arms at their their slots, the said pins being located and moving in a plane situated centrally between the pivots of said claw-carrying members.

2. A nail-grab comprising a rod having a handle and lateral projections, "claw-carrying members pivotally connected with said rod and having slotted arms, a slide movable on said rod and having pins engaging the said arms at their slots, bars extending from said slide lengthwise of the rod and provided with slots engaged by the projections on the rod, another handle secured to the outer ends of said bars, and a spring interposed between the two handles.
