ALMERON M. LANE, OE WINSTED, CONNECTICUT, ASSIG-NOR TO THE XVM. L. GILBERT CLOCK COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CLOCK-CASE.
nPEC/'IFICATIOIT forming part of Letters Patent No. 321,613, dated July '7, 1885.
Application tiled February 10, 1885.
To aZZ whom, t may concern.-
Beit known that I, ALMnRoN M. LANE, of Winsted, in the county of Litcheld and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in clocks, and more particularly to the relative arrangement of the clock-case, alarm -bells7 and handle, the object of the same being to provide an increased volume of sound by the introduction of two bells instead of one, and
to so locate the two bells that their supports shall form points of attachment for a handle, and, further,to construct and-arrange the several parts so that they shall produce a neat 2o and attractive appearance; and with these ends in view my invention consists in a pair of alarm-bells located on the top of a clock-case, the posts which support the bells being connected to form a point of attachment for a handle.
My invention further consists in a pair of alarm-bells secured on the clock-case, and adapted to be alternately rung by a hammer located between the two.
o 3 tures of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
The accompanying drawing represents a portion of aclock and case embodying my invention.
A represents the top of a clock-case in which the bell-supporting posts b are iirmly set at a suitable distance apa-rt, and provided with the 4o bells B. The bells may have the same or different pitches, and may be of the same or different sizes, as found desirable. Between the bells the top A is provided with an oblong closed slot, through which the hammer-rod c extends, the hammer C being located on aline with the edges of the bells B. i
The mechanism which actuates the hammer,
My invention further consists in certain fea- I (No model.)
causing it to vibrate between the bells and strike them in alternate order, may be of the ordinary construction or any approved construction, the same forming no part of my present invention.
The tops of the posts b are connected by a cross-bar, D, which is preferably provided with eyes in its ends, which receive the ends of the posts, the latter' being threaded and provided with thumb-nuts cl, which screw down and hold the ends or" the cross-bar D in snug contact with the bells, and hence the bells snugly on the posts.
The cross-bar D is preferably arched, as shown, and is provided at its center with an upright standard, E, rigidly secured thereto, in the upper end of which a handle-bar, e, or ring is secured for convenience in removing the clock from place to place.
Instead of the plain cross-bar and handle represented in the drawing,an ornamental bar and handle might be substituted, and the bar be secured to the posts in other ways than by the thumb-screws shown. Hence I do not Wish to limit myself strictly to the construction herein set forth, but reserve the privilege of making such changes as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with a clock-case and a pair of bells secured thereon, of a handle connecting the bell-posts, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination7 with a pair of bells secured to the top of a clock-case by means of rigid supports, of a cross-bar connecting the said supports and a handle secured to the crossbar, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALMEBCN M. LANE.
