PATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL JOHNSTON, OF SOUTH BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CIGAR-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 3 [,808, dated March 23, 1861.
T 0 all whom it may concern..- I
Be it known that I, MICHAEL JOHNSTON, of South Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Cigar-Holder; and I do hereby ment in cigar-holders is to obtain a means wherebythe smoke will be cooled during its passage through the holder to the mouth, and also to furnish a receptacle for condensing the smoke and retainingtheoil of tobacco, which is usually drawn into the mouth, producing an unpleasant taste, and destroying the flavor of the cigar.
- My invention consists in so constructing the holder that the smoke will be drawn from the cigar through a small tube into a metallic globule, andfrom thence through the main stem, which is held in the mouth, as will be hereinafter fully explained.
The main tubeais straight for a considerable length, and one end is curved dbwnward, and on this curved end a small hollow metallic vessel, b, is suitably secured. This vessel 1) has a small hole through its bottom, which should be closed airtight when the holder is in use, and for this purpose a short plug, d, is screwed into the hole, which may be taken out at pleasure. The opposite or straight end of tube a may be. furnished with an amber mouth-piece, e, for protecting the teeth from the metal of which tube a is made. Tube a may be made as long or as short as desirable, and above this tube anotherand smaller tube,
0, is arranged,=one end of which passes into the top part of the curved end of tube a, and
is carried down near the bottom of the vessel 1), as shown in Fig. l of the drawings. 0 is carried along on top of the tube a toward the mouth-piece e, and curved up and over, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and at this curved end a funnel-shaped receptacle, 9, is suitably secured, which has sharp angular points h 11. formed on its edge. This is a description of the several parts of my improved cigar-holder, and all of these parts, excepting the mouthpiece e, are made of metal and handsomely ornamented. The cigar is now introduced into the conical holding-piece g, and one or two of its points h h h are pressed against the cigar to confine it in place.
In using this cigar-holder the smoke is drawn through tube 0 into the vessel 5, thence upward and through the maintube a to the mouth, where the smoke arrives cool and pleasant. The tube a being carried down into the metallic bulb b, the smoke must first pass into this bulb before it can pass through the tube a to the mouth, and in this bulb the smoke is partially condensed cool and deprived of its bitter.
properties. The saliva which is rapidly secreted in smoking, and which escapes from the mouth into the tube a, is collected in. the bot tom. of the bulb b with the oil, and thisnauseous liquid can be drawn from the bulb b by taking out the plug d, and, if desirable, the tubes may be washed out and purified.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is x The cigar-holder constructed of parts 9, c, Z), (Z, and a, arranged as and for the purposes herein described and shown.
MICHAEL JOHNSTON.
