IM PROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-PIPES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 208,597, dated October 1, 1878; application filed August 22, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM HEYENGA, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco -Pipes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a longitudinal vertical central section of a pipe made in accordance with my invention, and Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views of the stem part and bowl part, respectively.

The bowl A, of otherwise ordinary or suitable construction, is provided with a neck intended to fit in a hole, a, which is formed in the stem B in such manner as to intersect the central draft-passage b of the stem. This passage b terminates at and opens into the hole, and the neck of the bowl is provided with a series of perforations so positioned that one or more of them, when the neck is inserted in place in the stem, will always register with the passage b. The perforations also communicate with the draft-passage c in the bowl. That part of the neck of the bowl which enters the ho e a may be made in one piece with the bowl itself or may be of any suitable material and construction for the purpose.

I refer, however, to provide a tubular extension, d, that forms a continuation of the neck and has the perforations above referred to, these perforations being indicated at f. This part d, which is made of metal or other proper material, is closed at its outer end, and forms, when the pipe is in the position shown'in Fig. 1, a cup or receptacle to retain the nicotine, &c.

I prefer to make the tubular receptacle removable, and for that purpose 1 provide it with an enlarged ferrule-like end, d, which fits around the bowl-neck snugly. but not so tightly that it may not be removed when desired.

The part 01, however, may be fixed to the neck and its outer end provided with a removable cap or cover, which would in a measure answer the same purpose.

The pipe-stem B, beyond the hole at, widens,

and at this point is formed so as to constitute a cap or cover for the mouth of the bowl, as shown at B, a rim, g, on this part of the stem fitting around the bowl, as shown in Fig. 1.

Perforations h are formed in the cover B, to permit air to have access to the mouth of the bowl when the pipe is in use.

To use the pipe, the neck (1, after the pipe is charged, is inserted into hole a, the pipe at this time being held with the mouth of the bowl uppermost, and the bowl itself turned laterally on the neck d as a pivot, so as to be to one side of cover B. In this position the pipe can be readily lighted.

The neck d is then drawn a little out from the hole a to allow the bowl to clear the rim g, and the bowl is then turned on pivot 01 until its mouth is brought under the cover B. When this has been done the neck dis pressed back into hole a and the bowl into cover B.

The pipe can then be turned so as to bring the bowl uppermost, as shown in Fig. 1. It is preferable to hold the pipe in this position, for then the neck (1 acts as a catch-all; but the pipe, if desired, can be turned to bring the bowl underneath, and can be smoked in that way. In a pipe of this kind the tobacco always remains dry, and the pipe can be smoked anywhere without danger.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination of the bowl and its perforated neck with the stem formed with a hole or socket to receive the neck, and with a cap to cover the mouth of the bowl, these parts being arranged for joint operation, substantially as set forth.

2. In a pipe in which the bowl part and stem part are combined, as described, a tubular removable perforated neck-piece, forming at once a receptacle or catch-all and the connecting medium between the bowl and the stem, as set forth.
