SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 313,425, dated March 3, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, RIOHARDL. HULL, of Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lanterns, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

My invention particularly relates to those lanterns which are 'used by railroad employs; but my invention is applicable to all kinds of lanterns, the object of my invention being to provide a lantern which may be lighted and extinguished, and the wick of which may be adjusted without detaching the oil-reservoir and burner from the lantern-casing, so that the burner may never be exposed to drafts, and thus accidentally extinguished.

To the above purposes my invention consists in a lantern, the glass globe of which is provided with an aperture by means of which access is afiorded to the burner for the purpose of lighting or extinguishing the burnerliame and for adjusting the wick. I

My invention further consists in the provlsion of a removable cover for the aperture, both as hereinafter described and claimed.

In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved lantern, showing the cover in closed condition. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same, showing the cover in open condition. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a lantern provided with a modified form of my invention. Fig. 4c is a detached view of the modified form of cover. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view of the same.

In the said drawings, A designates the base, A the top, and a the open-work shield, of a lantern. These parts may be of the usual or any preferred form.

B designates the glass globe of the lantern, which is provided with an aperture, 1).

B designates the cover, which may be either hinged to the base of the lantern, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or removably attached thereto, as is shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5. Whether the cover B is hinged to the base or is ar- B when the cover is to be held in closed condition, and to be turned out of engagement with the inner side of the globe when the cover is to be opened, the said catch being carried in an aperture in the cover B.

In the arrangement shown in Figs. 3, 4., and 5 the catch 12 has two arms, I) b", which engage with the inner side of the globe A, so as to hold the detachable cover in closed condition, the catch I) being in this arrangement also carried in an aperture in the cover B.

In order to prevent the cover B and catch 1) (shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5) from beinglost off of the lantern, they are held to the lantern by a chain, b

Thus it will be seen that when the cover is in closed condition the burner flame is protected from drafts, and that by turning the aperture 7) I away from the wind and opening the cover B the burner may be readily lighted or the wick 8 5 adjusted without interference from the draft and without detaching the oil-reservoir and burner from the lantern-body.

Having thus described my invention.I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. An improved lantern having its globe provided with an aperture, in combination with a cover for said aperture provided with a wire fastening bent to form a handle and catch for securing the cover in closed position, 5 as described.

2. The combination, with the globe B, having the aperture b, of the cover B, havingthe catch 2), constructed of wire bent to form the handle, and the arms b as set forth.
