LAMP-BURNER.
Application filed June 8, 1918.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Jon HAss, a citizen of Poland, residing at Pittsburgh, county of Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in lamp burners, and particularly to types used in connection with kerosene or like fluid combustibles.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a burner having means for extinguishing the flame in a convenient manner without blowing into the chimney and risking danger caused by such action.
A further object is to provide means whereby the extinguishment of the flame is accomplished in a positive and eflective manner by rotating one of the extending stems engaged with the burner.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure l is a side elevational View showing a lamp burner made in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is another side elevational View of the same, taken in a different plane, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view, taken on line 33 of Fig. 2.
The base of the burner is provided with the usual screw thread 11 by which it is engaged with a lamp body, the main upper portion 12 of the burner being extended out wardly in order to support the chimney (not shown), which is held in position by spring arms 14,-, a plurality of perforations 15 extending through the body to permit the entrance of air necessary to support combustion.
A cap or bonnet 16 is attached to the body 12 by hinges 17 and is provided at its opposite edge with a spring 18 which is adapted to make contact with the edge of the burner.
A rectangular wick tube 20 extends upward through the burner, the same having an opening through its wall into which extends the peripheral teeth of the wick actuating wheel 22, fixed upon a spindle 23, journaled in the base 10 of the burner, the extending end of the spindle having mounted upon it an operating knob or disk 24, the

Secured upon the upper portion ofthe wick tube 20 is a flattened band 25, held normally in position by the inturned clips 26, and formed with a pair of projecting lugs 28, containing pins 29, formed with a swinging plate integral with an extinguisher or damper plate 31 adapted to cover over the open end of the wick tube 20, which is cut away upon the sides adjacent to the plate permitting its entry.
The side edges of the plate 30 are also turned inwardly so as to form a substantially tight inclosure for the upper end of the tube, preventing the entrance of air necessary to support the flame from the wick. The plate 30 is bent outwardly at its lower end, into an angularly extending portion 34 having a raised center and containing a transverse slot 35 formed between a pair of oppositely disposed lugs 36 and 37 between which is engaged the upper end of a lever 4.0, the lever being fixed upon a spindle 41, extending out from the burner opposite to the spindle 23 and like it, being provided with an operating head 42.
Fixed in the upper portion of the lever 40 is a pin 44 adapted to slide below the raised portion of the bent plate 34; so that when the spindle is rotated in one direction as to raise the plate or shutter 30, closing the opening at the top of the wick tube 20, or when the spindle is rotated in the other direction, its upper end will make contact with the raised portion 36 of the plate, causing it to rotate upon the pin 29 and allow ing the wick to be extended in the usual manner. Thus by operating the knob 42, the extinguishing element 31 may be applied or removed from the top of the wick tube, while the wick therein may be manipulated by operating the extending knob 24, thereby providing an easy and efficient means for extinguishing the light without danger.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a lamp extinguisher, the combination with a burner having a wick tube and means for raising or lowering a wick therein, of an extinguishing plate adapted to close the, upper end of said wick tube, said plate bent outwardly at its lower end, an angularly extending portion formed thereby having a raised center, and containing a transverse slot, a pair of oppositely disposed lugs at opposite sides of said slot, a bracket secured to said Wick tube upon which said extinguishing plate is pivoted, a spindle passing transversely through said burner opposite to the means for raising or lowering said Wick, and a lever engaged upon said spindle, the upper end oi said lever being operatively engaged between said lugs, a pin in the upper portion of said lever adapted to slide below said raised center of the angularly disposed extension for raising said extinguishing plate upon the rotation of said spindle in one direction and for allowing a rotation of said raised portion upon said pin upon the rotation of said spindle in the opposite direction, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
