Description
July 25, 1961 c. B. SULLIVAN 2,993,211
COMBINED SCARF AND HEAD COVERING Filed Sept. 12, 1958 INVENTOR CAQOA 5. 5044mm) BY fimv/ ATTORNEY5 United States Patent 2,993,211 COMBINED SCARF AND HEAD COVERING Carol B. Sullivan, 235 E. 46th St., New York 17, N.Y. Filed Sept. 12, 1958, Ser. No. 760,591 1 Claim. (Cl. 2'207) This invention relates broadly to womens wearing apparel and, more particularly, provides a combined article of new and improved construction which, when worn, forms a covering for the head and a scarf which goes about the neck.
The invention is described in the following specification and is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 is a plan view of the combined cap and scarf provided by the invention, and
FIGS. 2 and 3 are, respectively, front and rear views showing the article according to the invention when worn on the head and about the neck.
The combined cap and scarf provided by this invention is shown at 2 in the drawings and consists of a piece of material, such as cloth, which, in FIG. 1 of the drawing, is shown in plan view as it would appear when laid out flat. This piece of material is cut to have a straight edge 4 the ends of which are joined by a second edge 6 which is generally arcuate in shape. The ends of the edges 4, 6 come together in pointed parts as shown at 8, 10. The shape of the arcuate edge 6 is such that the article is symmetrical about its median line, which is a line normal to straight edge 4 at the midpoint thereof. Along and adjacent this median line the device has such a dimension or length that in this area it forms a part 12 which will cover the back part of the head from approximately the hair line at the top of the forehead to the nape of the neck. The length of the device along the straight edge 4 is such that when the article is placed in position with the center part of the straight edge 4 at approximately the hair line above the forehead the pointed end parts 8, will hang down on either side of the face and will extend downwardly considerably below the chin so that the ends may be wrapped about the neck.
Adjacent the pointed end part 8 the article is provided with a button 14 and adjacent the other pointed end 10 there is provided a loop 16. Adjacent but spaced inwardly from the pointed end 10 there is provided an opening 18 in and through the material of the article itself, which opening is preferably adjacent the straight edge 4 and elongated in a direction normal to that edge.
In the use of the combined cap and scarf provided by the invention the center part of the straight edge 4 is. positioned along the hair line above the forehead as shown in FIG. 2 of the drawing and, in this position, the end parts 8, 10 of the article will hang down on either side of the face. The center part of the arcuate edge 6 will be at the rear of the head and adjacent the nape of the neck and the central part of the article will cover the back and 2,993,211 Patented July 25, 1961 ice sides of the head. The pointed end 8 of the article is now passed through the opening 18 which is adjacent the end 10 and the material at and adjacent end 8 is passed through this opening until the two ends 8, 10 come together at the nape of the neck and outside the part 12 which covers the back of the head. In this position the button 14 may be passed through the loop 16 in order to hold the ends 8, 10 together and to hold the article onto the head. With the article in position, as shown in FIGS. 2 and 3, the straight edge 4 will frame the face and the article itself will cover the entire head except the face while the pointed end parts 8, 10 will surround the neck and be connected together to hold the article firmly in place.
While I have described and illustrated in this specification certain embodiments of my invention, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that other embodiments, as well as modifications of those disclosed, may be made and practiced without departing in any way from the spirit and scope of the invention, for the limits of which reference must be made to the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
An article of wearing apparel which when worn forms a covering for the back and sides of the head and a scarf about the neck, said article comprising a piece of material having an elongated straight edge the center part of which is adapted to be placed along the hairline above the forehead and the end parts of which are adapted to extend downwardly along the sides of the face, said straight edge being of such length that it is adapted to surround the face and extend around the neck to the back of the neck, said article also having an opposing curved edge the ends of which meet the ends of the straight edge to form pointed end parts, the article being symmetrical about a line normal to the straight edge at the center thereof and intersecting the curved edge and being of 'suflicient width along this line that it will cover the head from the hair line above the forehead to the nape of the neck, an opening in the article adjacent said straight edge and near one of said end parts and through which the other end part may be passed, and means for connecting the two end parts.
