UNITED STATEs PATENT Trio HAZEN H. PERKINS, OF KEWANEE, ILLINOIS.
WAGON END=GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,400, dated May 13, 1884.
Application tiled March 27, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern- Be it known that I, HAZEN II. PERKINS, a citizen of the Unit-ed States, residing at Kewanee, in the county of Henry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVagon End-Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, refer ence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. 7
My presentinvention relates to wagon endgates; and it consists in certain improvements in the end-gate for which Letters Patent No. 250,280 were granted to me November 29, 1881, which improvements are hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure l is a perspective showing the rear end of a wagon-box and my patented end-gate in a-closed position with my improvements. Fig. 2 is aside elevation of the endgate in an open position. Fig. 3 is an enlarged elevation of the parts incl'osed by the dotted lines 00 x at Fig. 1, Fig. 4. is a detail plan, hereinafter referred to.
Referring tothe drawings by letters, the same letter indicating the same part in the several figures, A represents the rear end of a wagon-box, with sides A, bottom B, and an end-gate 0, having sides D and back D, hinged thereto at its lower side, and sustained by rods I. which engage with eyes in plates E, that are attached to the sides A and pro ject through holes F in the back D, insame manner as shown and described in aforesaid patent, except as hereinafter differently described.
n applying the end-gates to wagons of different constructions, I have found that in order to have the plates E coincide with'the holes F it was necessary to construct the plates E of some form that would admit of adjusting them in higher or lower locations on the sides A without coming in contact with the rod J, the end of which is shown in the plate J in Fig. 2 which connects said side-boards in all ordinary wagon-boxes; and to this end I use plates E, constructed as shown in the accompanying drawings, with a bent portion, 6, by means of which the plate E may be secured by the bolts 6 to the side A, with the eye 6 in the outer end of the plate in same horizontal plane as the rod J, as shown at Fig. 2. By means of holes a at different heights in the side board A the plate E may be adjusted in higher or lower planes. The plates E, for the two sides of the wagon-box, are right and left handed, or bent in opposite directions, and hence may be changed, and the plate, when used as shown by full lines at Fig. 2, may be reversed or turned with its curved side downward when used on the other side of the wagon-box, as shown by dotted lines at same figure. The plates E are also bent outwardly at e, as shown at Fig. 4., so that they may fit over, the plates J, which are usually secured to the sides A, and receive the rod J. The circular hole 9 through the plate G, as in aforesaid patent, when made large enough to permit the end of the plate E and the hook i on the end of the rod I to pass through the hole, did not form a bearing for the sides of the hook when turned down to lock the end-gate, as shown at Fig. 1, and hence permitted the rod I to turn, and thereby throw its lower curved end out of proper position. To remedy this defect I make the hole 9 in the plate G of quarterfoil form. \Vith a hole of this form, the upper and lower sides permit the plate E to pass through, and the two sides permit the hook to pass through when swinging the end-gate open or closed, while the inwardly-projecting points 9 form bearings for the sides of the hook i when turned down to hold the end-gate in a closed position.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an end-gate fastening, in combination with the wagon-box, the end-gates and rods I and J, the'plates E, having holes 6 in their outer ends and curved at e, and adapted to fit either side of the wagon-box for different adjustments, substantially as and for the purposeset forth.
2. In an end-gate fastening, in combination with the wagon-box, plates E, turi'i-down endgate, and hook-rods I, the plates G, having holes 9 of quarterfoil shape, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
Witnesses: HAZEN H. PERKINS.
