WILLIAM S. VVITTER, OF RIDOTT, ILLINQIS.
DUMPING END-GATE FOR WAGONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 625,006, dated May 16, 1899. Application filed February 23, 1898. Serial No. 706,505. lNo model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM S. WITTER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Ridott, in the county of Stephenson and State 'of Illinois, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvementsin Dumping End-Gates for Wagons, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to produce a dumping end-gate that can be adapted to fit any wagon-box snugly enough to permit the hauling of small grain therein and that may also be used as a shoveling-board whenever desired.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this specification, Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a wagon-box provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the parts shown in Fig. lwith the upper cross-piece and upper locking devices of the end-gate wanting. Fig. 3 isaside elevation of the-parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a like View of the same with the endgate thereof in position to allow the contents of the wagon-box to be dumped thereout. Fig. 5 is also a like view of the same with the end-gate adjusted for use as a shovelingboard. Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view of the wagon end-gate. Fig. 7 is a detailed top plan View of parts employed to connect the endgate with the wagon-box and will be fully described hereinafter. Fig. 8 is a top plan View of fastening devices clearly shown in elevation in Fig. 1.
A A are the sides and bottom of a wagonhox, thelformer of which isprovided with the usual end-board cleats A which are secured thereto, so as to form vertical end-board ways A Fig. 2.
B are rectangular strips of any desired thickness, each provided with a rectangular tongue B, preferably of light angle-iron of the form shown, Fig. 2, secured thereto and of suitable dimensions to he slid into the ways A formed by the cleats A The strips B are also secured to the wagon-box by means of bolts and nuts B 13 O are single-leaved strap-hinges provided with end-gate stops 0 and locking-lugs O integral therewith, and pivoted at their lower ends to the inner faces of the strips 13 by means of pintles O D is an end-gate, the component parts the upper endsof the hinges O on pivot-pins D terminating at their outer ends in eyes D F are retaining-pins to be inserted through the eyes DPin the pivot-pins D into the vertical sockets F in the upper ends of the strips B to provide hinge-bearings for the end-gate D when it is desired to raise it preparatory to dumping a load from the wagon-box, Fig. 4. G are locking-rods provided with eyes G G at their outer and inner ends, by the former of which they connect with eyes H on the eyebolts H.
I, Figs. 1 and 2, are straight-edged strips of metal secured to the outer face of the endgate D to insure close durable joints between the same and the strips B. J J are flat strips of metal secured to the end-gate D to furnish bearings and a fastening for parts to be described hereinafter, the inner end of the former curving downward, outward, and upward to form a catch J 2 and the outer ends of both being bent inward through therings K, which are of smaller in= ternal diameter than the external diameter of the eyes G on the locking-rods G, which pass andfreely slide therethrough.
L is a locking-rod fastening provided with transverse lugs L L to engage with the eyes G on the locking-rods G, pivoted at L to the end-gate D and terminating at its free end in a latch L adapted to engage the catch J whereinto it may be secured by means of a pivoted button L The parts G L, with their attachments and connections, constitute the upper locking devices of the end-gate D.
M are shanks terminating'in transverse catches M, having holes M extending therethrough and secured to the end-gate D.
N are screw-eyes projecting downward from the under side of the cross-piece D 0 is a bell-crank having a short arm 0 and a long arm 0 and jointed at the center of the short arm 0 to the under side of the crosspiece D by means of the pivot-pin O P are two rods-one pivotally connected with the outer and the other with the inner end of the part 0' and extending through the eyes N, the holes M in the part M, and the hole Q in the part 0 R is a catch for locking the hell-crank O in the position clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 6.
The parts OF M, with their attachments and connections, constitute the lower locking devices of the end-gate D.
S is a handle for operating the end-gate D on the bearings, composed of the parts I) F.
Figs. 1 and 4 show the wagon-box with the end-gate D locked in position to retain therein anything that it may be desired to carry therewith.
If the locking-rod fastening L be disengaged from the catch J and carried downward to the position indicated by dotted lines, Fig. 1, the inner ends of the locking-rods'G may be disengagedtherefrom. Thereafterdisengage the arm 0 of the bell-crank 0 from the catch R and turn the same to the position indicated by dotted lines, Fig. 6. The rods P will be thereby Withdrawn from engagement with the parts 0 M and the end-gate may be raised to the position shown in Fig. 4 preparatory to dumping any desired load from the wagonbox. If the end-gate D, Fig. 4, be now low eredto the position shown in Fig. 3 and the bell crank O and rods P be restored to the positions shown in solid lines in Figs. 1 and 6 and the retaining-pins F be withdrawn from the sockets B and eyes D the same may be lowered to the position shown in Fig. 5, where it is adapted to serve as a shoveling-board.
I claim 7 1. In an end-gate for wagon-boxes, in combination, a wagon-box, an end-gate, a pair of strap-hinges pivoted, at their lower ends, to the inside of the lower portion of the wagonbox', and, at their upper ends, to the upper portion of the end-gate, and the upper and lower locking devices of the end-gate, sub= stantially as and for. the purpose specified.
2. In an end-gate for wagon-boxes, in com= bination, a Wagon-box, an end-gate, a pair of single-leaved strap-hinges,provided with end gate stops and locking-lugs and pivoted, at their lower ends, to the inside of the wagonbox, and, at their upper ends, to the upper portion of the end-gate, and the upper and lower end-gate locking devices, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
WILLIAM S. VITTER.
