Description
H. WAGHTER.
WAGON BODY.
ON F1 Patented Nov. 2, 1909.
HENRY WACI-ITER, OF CLINTON, MISSOURI.
WAGON-BODY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2, 1909.
Application filed March 8, 1909. Serial No. 482,086.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY IVAGHTER, a citizen of the vUnited States, residing at Clinton, in the county of Henry and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trigon-Bodies, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wagon bodies, and refers particularly to a wagon adapted for corn harvesting or shucking.
The main object of my invention is the provision of a novel form of side-board which will increase the capacit-y of the wagon body, which can be secured in a vertical position and which can be dropped or swung away from the wagon body as occasion demands, which improvements will possess merit in the point of simplicity, durability, and inexpensiveness, and insure a useful and practical improvement.
To attain the desired objects, the invention'consists in the combination with the wagon body, of a side board adapted to be secured in a vertical position or to be dropped down as circumstances require.
rlheinvention further consists of a wagon body embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure l, represents a vertical transverse sectional view of a wagon body equipped with my side board. Fig. 2, represents a longitudinal sectional view of a wagon body, the side board being shown in elevation. Fig. 3, represents a vertical transverse sectional view of the side board, with the hinged section tilted. Fig. l, represents a perspective view of one section of the side board, and, Fig. 5, represents one of the novel irons used in my side board improvements.
It will be understood that my side board can be applied to any wagon body where it will perform the functions for which it is intended, and I do not wish to confine myself to the form of body shown in the drawings, but in said drawings the letter A, designates the wagon body mounted on the holsters B, and is of the usual rectangular form, and composed of a bottom, sides, and ends. To the side of the wagon body I attach a pair of irons which consist of a fork C, which embraces the side, the arm D, having at its upper end the eye or opening E, and, at one side of t-he fork, a lateral stud or pintle F, adapted to engage the sleeve G, formed on the plates H, secured to the side board member VJ From this construction it will be understood that the iron forked portions lit over the side of the body and provide a hinged connection with the side pieces, and to secure the side pieces in a vertical or inclined position I provide the eyes K, which when the board is in a vertical position tit in the eyes in the upper ends of the irons, and to said eyes K are connected the pivoted hooks L, which hold the board in vertical position by engagement. with loops or keepers M, and hold the board in inclined position by having their hooked ends engage the eye on the irons, as most clearly shown in Fig. 3. If desired, a number of sections may be connected to the hinged side board, and in such case these sections N, are provided with a pair of embracing straps O, which fit snugly over the hinged section of the side board.
The advantages of my improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such an improvement, and it will be understood that by being able to lower the board a much casier loading and unloading of the wagon is permitted, and when used for shucking corn it will serve to catch the corn as it falls and direct it into the wagon body, thus preventing the corn from falling to the ground and being destroyed by being run over by the wagon. It will also be understood that my improvements may be applied to any body, when it is necessary to increase the capacity of the wagon body, and to permit an easy loading and unloading, and also that my improvements are ctlicient, durable, and practicable.
I claim:
1. In a wagon body, the combination with the sides thereof, of irons having bifurcated portions engaging the sides, an auxiliary board pivotally joined to said irons, and means pivoted to the said board and having their free ends engaging eyes thereon for securing the board in a vertical position.
In a wagon body, the combination of a supplemental board, irons pivoted thereto and having a forked portion to engage the side of the body, an upwardly projecting arm on the irons, hooks and eyes secured to the board and serving in connection with the said project-ing arm to secure the supplemental board in upright or inclined position.
lOO
3. The combination of a wagon body, irons having a forked portion engaging the same, a lateral pintle and an upwardly projeeting arm having an eye formed therein on the upper part of said irons, a board pivotally secured to said pintles, a hook secured to the board passing through the eye in the iron for securing the board in upright or inclined position. n
4. The combination with a wagon body, of irons having a forked portion engaging the same, a vertical arm having an eye in its upper end on oneside of the iron and a lateral pintle on the other side, a supplemental board, means on said board engaging the pintle to form a hinged connection between the board and the wagon body, and means pivoted on the supplemental board passing through the eye in the arm and engaging an eye on the board for holding the board in upright position.
5. The combination with a wagon body, of irons having a forked portion engaging the same, a vertical arm having an eye in its upper end on one side of the iron and a lateral pintle on the other side, a supplemental board, means on said board engaging t-he pintle to form a hinged connection between the board and the wagon body, and means pivoted on the supplemental board and passing through the eye in the arm and engaging an eye on the board for holding the board in upright position, the free ends of said pivoted means being adapted to engage the eye in the arm to hold the board when in depressed position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
