Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
EPHRAIM L. HARLOW, OF MONMOUTH, MAINE, ASSIGNOR TO W'M. G. BROWN, OF SAME PLACE.
PEGGINGr-JACK.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 29,434, dated July 31, 1860.
T o all who/m, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EPHRAIM L. HARLOW, of Monmouth, in the county of Kennebec and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Pegging- Jack or Last Holder; and I do hereby declare that the same is fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, of whicl Figure l, is a front elevation, and Fig. 2, a longitudinal and vertical section of a pegging jack provided with my invention the nature of which consists in an arrange ment of a spring and heel lever together and with respect to the heel post of the jack.
In the drawings A, denotes the heel post and, B, the toe rest or post, the two being connected by a cross bar, C
A lever, D, is arranged within a recess a, made in the post, A. This lever not only turns on a ulcrum or pin, b, which is passed through the post, but projects above the top of the post and when in use passes into the rear part of the last, E, as shown in Fig. 2. The lower end of the lever passes through the arm, c, of a long spring, F, which is arranged on the outside of the post and so as to extend beyond the same as shown in the drawings. The upper end of the said spring is fastened to the post or against a metallic cap or ferrule7 CZ, placed thereon.
The elastic power of the spring operates to draw on the lower end of the lever in such manner as to turn the lever on its fulcrum and force the last near its toe down upon the toe rest. By grasping the heel part and the spring in the hand of a person so as to press the lower part of the spring toward the post the lever will be moved in such manner as to enable the last to be easily raised off the heel and toe rests or be applied thereto as circumstances may require.
My improvement is advantageous in many respects. It renders the jack simple in construction durable and easily used. As in some respects it is self operating, it dispenses with thumb screws or levers to be actuated either by the hand or foot of a workman. It can be constructed at little expense and is not easily put out of order. By means of it but a moment of time will be required, eitler to affix or remove a last from the Jac I do not claim a movable heel lever in combination with the heel and toe rests of a pegging ack, but
That I do claim isy The application or arrangement of the sprino, F, with respect to the post, A, and the heel lever D, and so as to operate substantially as speciied.
EPHBAIM L. I-IARLOW.
Vitnesses z JOHN SAFFORD, C. D. NoRRIs.
