Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDRENV I. GOVE, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.`
IMPROVED WRENCH.
To a/ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW I. GovE, of the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Vrench, which I call Goves Self- Adjusting Wrench, andl do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the anneXed drawings, making a part of this specitieation, in which- Figure l represents the Wrench as complete. Fig. 2 is a sectional view. Fig. 3 represents the stationary jaw and shaft. Fig. 4 represents the movable jaw with the rack, &c. Fig. 5 is a plate, the use of which can be better explained hereinafter.
A represents the stationary jaw of a wrench with a shaft 0r arm n, the heel of which is round. as shown at I), terminating with a screw c.
B is the movable jaw sliding on the shaft or arm a of the stationary jaw, having attachedto each side arms d (Z, upon which are racks e e.
D is a hollow handle, of wood or metal, through which is passed the shaft or arm o of the stationary jaw, and confined thereto by the nut E; also, in same hollow is passed the rack of the movable jaw B, the arms d working on each side of the shaft a.
S is a spiral spring coiled around the heel of the shaft a.. 71. (seen more particularly in Fig. 5) is an oblong plate sliding on the heel l), pressing against the rack c e.
F is a lever attached to the handle D, as shown at G.
H is a spring.
K is a pin passed through a shoulder on the lever F.
P is a catch to hold lever F.
Operation: Vhen the lever F is let loose from the catch P it is thrown by the spring lfiinto position, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2, and the pin K being released from lthe rack e e the movable jaw B is pressed against the stationary jaw A by means of the spiral spring S, the plate 7L being pressed against the ends of the arms d d. To use the wrench, draw back the arm B tothe necessary distance, press upon the lever F by the grip of the hand, which will throw the pin K into the rack e e', and hold thejaw firm upon the nut or bolt. To change the position of the wrench upon the nut or bolt, it is not necssary to move it therefrom, but simply release the grip of the hand. The lever F Will rise, releasing the pin K from the rack, thus allowing the jaw B to yield in passing the wrench around the nut'or bolt. XVhen brought into proper positiomgrasp the handle firmly, so that the pin K will be thrown into the rack again, and so on till the work is completed.
Having thus fully described the nature and object. of my invention, what l claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Pat- Witnesses'.
JAMES L. KING, F. I. THIBAULT.
