MOP-HEAD.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 17,527, dated June 9, 1857.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD P. THOMP- soN, of Worcester, in the county of I'Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Mop Head or Holder; and I do hereby declare that the same is fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 denotes an external view of my said mop head and its handle when the former is in place in the socket of the latter. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same under like circumstances. Fig. 3 is a side view of the mop head as it appears when removed from the socket of the handle. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the said socket. Fig. 5 a view of the upper end of the handle. Fig. 6 is an edge view of the mop head.

In constructing my invention, I make use of a metallic or steel spring a, curved as shown in Fig. 3. This is joined to or made -in one piece with two bent legs or bars, b, ZJ', and o, c, which are arranged with respect to the spring and have the forms as shown in said Fig. 3, and also in Fig. 2. The handle A, should be made with a square cavity or socket (Z, for reception of the two parts b', c of the legs when they are closed together as shown in Fig. 2.

In applying a cloth to the mop head it is to be passed through it and between the spring a, and the superior parts@ c, of the legs. This having been done, the two parts Z2, c, are to be grasped between the fingers and pressed close together, and when in this state they are to be inserted and pushed endwise into the socket d. By the pressure of the spring a, they will be forced outward against the sides of the socket so that the mop head will not only be caused to grip and hold the cloth, but confine itself in place in the handle.

A mop head of this kind can be made very cheap and will be advantageous in many respects in comparison with others in common use.

I do not claim a mop holder or clamp having a movable jaw operated by or secured in place by a screw or a ring and a hook, but

IVhat I do claim as of my invention is- The improved self acting mop holder made substantially as described, viz. with a spring a, and two bent legs or bars b, 5'; c, c, applied together and operating in manner and in combination with a socket d, in the handle A, substantially as specified.
