MACHINE FOR POINTING NAILS AND SPIKES.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 24,705, dated July 5, 1859.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, \VILLIAM SPINK, of the city of Providence and county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, &c., have invented a new and Improved lWode of Pointing Nails and Spikes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of my invention consists in providing the Reed nail machine, or any other machine to which my invention may be applied, with an apparatus for the purpose of pointing nails and spikes and which I call the Spink nail pointer.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

The accompanying drawing Figure 1, represents a front view of the Reed nail machine and Fig. 2 represents a section view of my invention together with the parts of said Reed machine to which the same is applied.

A represents the bed piece of the Reed nail machine, B the spindle of the same, G the gripping lever of the same, and F the pointer attached thereto and which I claim as part of my invention.

F consists of a piece of cast steel, iron or other like material about one and one fourth inches in thickness, about eight inches in length and about one and one half inches in width, varying in size however according to the size of the machine to which it is applied or attached, and which is inserted in a groove made in the gripping lever C, at its extremity and fastened therein by a bolt or pin R passing through C and F transversely and permitting the pointer to move freely up and down on the same as its center of motion.

D represents the heading lever of the Reed nail machine, E the cutting jaw of the same and G is the bunter another portion of my invention, which is a bar of metal of such size and so attached to the back part ofthe cutting jaw E by bolts or screws that when the cutting jaw is drawn back, the lower end of the bunter G, strikes upon the end of the pointer F and depresses the same.

H represents the back piece of the Reed nail machine under the lip of which the nail or spike is pointed in the manner herein described.

I is a spring for raising the pointer F after the nail or spike is pointed, placed underneath F and attached to the gripping lever C.

The mode in which my invention operates is as follows: The nail or spike is cut off and headed by the machine in the ordinary manner, but while the same is still held firmly in its place, with its lower portion underneath the lip of the back piece H, the cutting jaw E as it falls back, acts by means of the bar G upon the extremity of F immediately beneath it viz, G depressing the same and thereby elevating the other end and bringing it up against the lower part of the nail or spike which is thus pointed by the pressure between the lip of the back piece H and the end of the pointer F. When the cutting jaw in its forward motion lifts up G and thereby relieves the pointer from pres sure, the spring I lifting up its end, depresses the other and releases the nail or spike.

I do not claim the back piece H or any other portion of the Reed machine or any other machine to which my invention may be applied.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,

The combination of the bunter G, the pointer F and the spring I with each other and with the back piece and other parts of the Reed machine or with the corresponding parts of any other nail machines constructed and operated substantially in the manner as hereinbefore set forth.
