COMBINED STAPLE AND DIE.

. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,540, dated February 12, 1884.

' and useful Improvements in Combined Staples and Dies and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had manufacture.

My invention further consists in combining two of saidstaplesto produce a fastening for attaching together papers, fabrics, or other analogous material or articles, whereby the prongs of one ofthe staples are inserted through the material from the upper side thereof, and the other staple being inserted from the under or opposite side of the material, but at right The prongs of both staples are n'ow pressed toward each other by suitable means, when the points thereof, coming each in Contact with the deiiectingdies wrought in the base of its fellow staple, are forcibly clinched thereunder, thereby producing a very attractive, simple, and inexpensive fastener, all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure l represents (enlarged) a vertical central'section through my improved staple when used as a fastening.- Fig. 2 represents a side view of the staple. Fig. 3 represents an inverted plan view of the blank from which the staple is formed. Fig. 4L represents a central section through the staple on line x of Fig. 3, showing the prong-detlecting dies therein.

I am well aware that staples having two ou more prongs and having heads of various fou mations are old. Therefore I do not make claim to such staples; but

W'hat I do claim, and desireto secure by l 2. The staple A, herein described, consistA ing of the enlarged head A and prongs a', said head having concave deflecting surfaces or dies formed on its under side at right angles to the prongs, substantially as shown andl set forth.

3. The method of fastening, consisting in inserting the prongs of the dieheaded staple,

herein described, through the 'fabric or mate` rial at right angles to asimilar staple inserted through the material from t-he opposite side thereof, the ends of theV prongs being then clinched beneath the heads and against the dies of the staples, all substantially as shown and set forth.
