SPEQIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,782, dated February 5, 1884. Application filed March 7, 1883. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT H. BEAZLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fayette, in the county of Howard and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shading-Pens, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying-drawings.

This invention relates to shading-pens for producing by ordinary writing shaded and conspicuous letters; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.

The bodyA of my improved shading-pen is of the shape and general construction of the ordinary pens now in general use, and it is thus adapted to be used in the ordinary penholders. The semi-cylindrical shell forming the body A is pointed at its front end, and providedwith a slit, B, so as to form the nibs O and D. The said nibs are also of the usual construction, with the exception that they are thickened at their outer ends, between the points 1 and 2, so as to form edges E, of the width which it is desired that the shading shall be. The said edges are cut off diagonally, so that when the pen is held, in writing, in the usual inclined position the said edges shall bear fully and freely upon the writingsurface. In order to assist the flow of ink, one of the nibs, O, is made somewhat longer than the other, and in order to prevent them from catching when rough paper or other ma terial is to be written upon, the ends oflthe Writing-edges are to be slightly rounded, as at F.

The pen may be made in various sizes for various kinds of work, and it may be manufactured of metal or of any other material that may be deemed suitable for the purpose.

I am aware that writing-pens have been made with their points or nibs turned or twisted at right angles to their bodies, so as to form vertical writing edges. I am also aware that pens have been made with points similar to the blades of drawing or ruling pens. These I do 'not claim.

I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. An improved shading-pen consisting of the herein-described semi-cylindrical body, having nibs thickened at their outer ends between the points 1 and 2, and cut off diagonally, so as to form a writing-edge, E, as set forth.

2. The improved shading-pen having the herein-described semi-cylindrical'body, provided with nibs of unequal length, thickened vertically between the points 1 and 2, as set forth.

3. The improved shading-pen comprising the herein-described body A, having slit B,

and nibs O D, of unequal length, thickened vertically between the points 1 and 2, the ends of said nibs being cutoff diagonally, so as to form the writing-edge, and rounded, as and for the purpose set forth.
