Description

Dec. 29, 1959 H. B. MILLER 2,918,782
TEXTILE SPINDLE Filed March 4, 1958 INVENTOR.
HARRY B. MILLER United States Patent Winding Company, Cranston, R.I., a corporation of Massachusetts Application March 4, 1958, Serial No. 719,095
2 Claims. (Cl. 57-130) The present invention relates to a textile spindle and more particularly relates to a textile spindle adapted to mount a conical package core thereon.
In the following specification and claims the term yarn is employed in a general sense to apply to all kinds of strand material, either textile or otherwise, and the designation package is intended to mean the product of a winding or twisting machine whatever its form.
In many textile operations it is desirable to have yarn wound on conical package cores. However, most prior art spindles for twisting machines are not adapted to mount cones so it is customary to wind a ring twister package on a pirn or bobbin. Sometimes such packages are unsuitable for a subsequent operation or for shipping purposes and the yarn must be rewound from the pirn or bobbin onto a cone necessitating an extra operation.
One object of the present invention is to provide a textile spindle which will adapt a twisting machine to utilize conical package cores.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a textile spindle means for quickly and easily mounting a conical package core thereon.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a textile spindle having means for mounting and rotating a conical package core.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a textile spindle having means for mounting a conical package core thereon wherein said core can be quickly and easily removed therefrom.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a textile spindle having means for mounting a conical package core thereon which is inexpensive to manufacture, and which is durable and economical in use.
Other objects of the invention will in part be obvious and will in part appear hereinafter.
The invention accordingly comprises the apparatus possessing the construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which are exemplified in the following detailed disclosure, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the claims.
For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of the invention, reference should be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
'Fig. l is a sectional front elevation of the textile spindle of the present invention with a conical package core mounted thereon; and
Fig. 2 is a front elevation with parts broken away of the textile spindle of Fig. l but showing a package wound on the core and said core in the doif position.
The textile spindle of the present invention is suitable for use with a ring twister and is so constructed that a conical package core can be quickly and easily placed thereon and securely held. The core can then be rotated with substantially no slippage, and yarn wound thereon. After winding, the package comprising said 2 core and the yarn thereon can be quickly and easily removed from the spindle.
Referring now to the drawing wherein a preferred embodiment of the textile spindle of the present invention is disclosed, the spindle comprises a substantially rigid blade 10 having a substantially cylindrical upper por tion 11, a tapered lower portion 13 adapted to be journaled in a spindle swing, and a short tapered section 20. Section 20 fits securely in the axial hole through whorl 12 to mount said whorl on said blade. Said whorl is provided with a pair of radially disposed upstanding driving vanes 22. Such a spindle is well known to those skilled in the art.
Cone base holder 14 is slidably mounted concentric with the axis of blade 10 and about the upper portion 11 thereof. Holder 14 has a frusto-conical surface 26 tapered to fit inside of core C, a chamferred upper surface 24 and a diametrol slot 28 in its lower surface, said slot capable of engaging vanes 22. Abutment 16 is secured to the upper portion 11 of the blade at a suitable location by set screw 30. A cap 18, having a cylindrical body having a diameter substantially equal to I opening 19 in the nose of core C, rounded and closed on one end and open on the opposite end to receive blade 10 is secured to said blade by means of a press fit.
The textile spindle of the present invention operates in the following manner. Holder 14 is aligned so that groove 28 engages vanes 22 as in Fig. 1. A core C is set over the spindle and pushed down so that cap 18 protrudes through opening 19. Chamferred surface 24 guides the base of core C into alignment with conical surface 26. Core C is pressed onto the spindle so that it is held firmly by surface 26 engaging the inside of said core and is held in axial alignment with blade 10 by surface 26 and cap 18.
The spindle is rotated by means well known to persons skilled in the art, for example, a driving belt in contact with whorl 12. Vanes 22 engaging groove 28 rotate holder 14 with the spindle.
To doff a wound package of yarn the package is lifted upwardly in the axial direction of the spindle. Opening 19 slides over cap 18 as the package is pulled. Holder 14, being in firm engagement with core C, moves axially therewith until said holder strikes abutment 16 as shown in Fig. 2. The sudden contact between holder 14 and abutment 16 stops said holder from continuing its axial movement and jolts core C loose therefrom, disengaging the package from the spindle.
Whereas the present invention is herein disclosed in an embodiment particularly suited for use on a ring twisting machine it should be understood that it can be used on any twisting machine, e.g. an uptwister or captwister, and since certain changes may be made in the above apparatus without departing from the scope of the invention herein involved, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What is claimed is:
1. A textile spindle adapted to hold a conical package core, said spindle comprising a blade having a substantially cylindrical upper portion, a whorl on said blade, a member slidably mounted on said blade and adapted to engage the inside of said core, cooperating means on said whorl and member for rotating said member, a cap fixed to the upper end of said blade and adapted to be engaged by the nose of said core, and an abutment fixed to said blade between said member and said cap.
2. A textile spindle adapted to hold a conical package core, said spindle comprising a blade having a substantially cylindrical upper portion, a whorl on said blade, 3,
