- Apparatus for cutting the thread of bobbins comprising, in combination, a rotary spindle having a free part adapted to support a bobbin, and a base; and a tubular means having a lower first portion mounted on said base and connecting said spindle and said tubular means for rotation, a second higher portion surrounding said base, and a flange on said second portion projecting outwardly from the same and having a peripheral cutting edge located intermediate said first portion and said free part of said spindle, said first portion being adapted to wind up a thread end of the bobbin so that upon doffing of said bobbin the thread portion between said bobbin and the thread end wound up on said first portion is tensioned to engage said cutting edge and severed.
- Apparatus for cutting the thread of bobbins comprising, in combination, a rotary spindle having a free part adapted to support a bobbin, and a base; and a tubular means having a lower first portion of smaller diameter mounted on said base and connecting said spindle and said tubular means for rotation, a second higher portion of greater diameter surrounding said base, and a flange on said second portion projecting outwardly from the same and having a peripheral cutting edge with sharp cutting projections located intermediate said first portion and said free part of said spindle, said first portion having an annular outer roughened surface adapted to wind up a thread end of the bobbin so that upon dotfing of said bobbin the thread portion between said bobbin and the thread end Wound up on said first portion is tensioned to engage said cutting edge and severed.

(Cl. 57-54) The invention concerns an apparatus for cutting threads on cops of spinning frames, twisting machines or the like and which is mounted coaxially with the spindle at the lower region thereof.
A thread cutting apparatus of this type is already known; such apparatus operating through the agency of movable knives, but is of complicated construction.
The present invention provides a considerably more simplified thread cutting apparatus requiring little maintenance. The apparatus is characterised by an annular cutting edge whose diameter is greater than the diameter of the spindle base, and provided with notches, teeth, pins, milled recesses or the like, preferably of sharp edged construction.
The invention will now be described further, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings illustrating two embodiments thereof and in which:
FIG. 1 shows a perspective view, of a spinning spindle provided with an apparatus according to the present invention;
FIG. 2 shows an axial section of the thread cutting apparatus as included in FIG. 1;

For convenience a thread cutting apparatus will hereinafter be described which is utilised on a spinning frame fitted with an apparatus for the automatic dofiing of the cops or bob-bins from the spindles but the invention is not limited to this context and is equally well applicable when the cops are intended to be dolled manually.
In the automatic dofiing apparati, a dofiing member, consisting substantially of a tiltable holder 1 provided with a resilient sleeve 2, is guided into telescopic engagement with cop 9 and is tilted into the position relative to the cop 9 as shown in FIG. 1 so that a gripping eifect results. Upon upward movement of the holder 1, the inclination of the holder relative to the pirn remaining constant, the cop 9 is lifted up from the spindle 12 (FIGS. 1 and 6).
In accordance with the invention a thread cutting apparatus is provided, the said apparatus comprising a stepped tubular means 13 secured to the spindle base 33 and having an outwardly projecting flange with an outer annular rosette-shaped cutting edge 14 (FIGS. 2 and 3) of greater diameter than that of the spindle base 33. The spindle is rotated by a pulley '30.
The cutting edge may be formed in a variety of shapes, for example with alternating curved projections and recesses, as best seen in FIG. 3. A sleeve portion below the projecting cutting edge 14 has an annular surface 16 which is roughened, knurled or otherwise treated, to provide a means for receiving, frictionally engaging and retaining the thread end during rotation of the spindle 12.
Immediately before the dofiing process the ring rail of the spinning frame moves downwardly in a manner known per se and thus causes yarn to be wound on to the pirn in a few spaced loops whereupon the thread end is caught by the roughened surface 16 and forms a winding 15 on the same so that the thread is firmly held on surface 16 of member 13.
In the doffing position shown in FIG. 1, on the upward movement of the holder 1 as described above, the thread cutting apparatus comes into operation since the thread portion 28 between the fixed winding 15 and the loops on the pirn is pressed against the cutting edge 14 (FIG. 1). The thread 28 is at the same time held at its upper part by the sleeve 2 and at its lower part by the knurling 16 and tensioned by the upward movement of the cop 9 to engage the sharp edge 14 until cutting takes place.
In view of the wear, damage and distortion caused to pirns during usage it frequently happens that not all pirns are engaged with the spindle shafts in the same relative position nor do the lower ends of all pirns terminate in close relationship with the spindle base 33. Thus, there is often created a small space between the pirn base and the spindle base.
It frequently happens that the thread or part of the winding 15 is wound into such space and in course of time a significant amount of thread is accumulated. The presence of this accumulation can give rise to a difiiculty in that the thread accumulation can interfere with ready dofling.
To obviate such undesired windings, according to the invention, tubular means 13 is constructed as shown in FIGS. 4 and 6 and is upwardly extended by a tubular extension 29 to cover the endangered area 21 of the spindle base 33.
FIGS. 1, 4, 5 and 6 show such a construction of the tubular means 13 built as the thread cutting apparatus. The height 31 is conveniently so dimensioned that the detrimental space between the base 24 of the pirn and the cup-shaped portion of tubular means 13 is avoided. The height 31 (FIG. 4) can be such that for all positions of the pirn arising in practice, the lower end of the pirn 9 placed on a spindle enters into the interior of the tubular extension 29.
I claim:
1. Apparatus for cutting the thread of bobbins, comprising, in combination, a rotary spindle having a free part adapted to support a bobbin, and a base; and means mounted on said base for rotation with said spindle and including a portion for winding up a thread end of the bobbin and a circumferential cutting edge arranged and constructed so that upon doffing of said bobbin a thread portion between said bobbin and the thread end wound up on said portion is tensioned to engage said cutting edge and severed.
2. Apparatus for cutting the thread of bobbins, comprising, in combination, a rotary spindle having a free part adapted to support a bobbin, and a base; and means mounted on said base for rotation with said spindle and including a portion for winding up a thread end of the bobbin and a circumferential cutting edge located intermediate said portion and said free part of said spindle so that upon doffing of said bobbin the thread portion between said bobbin and the thread end wound up on said portion is tensioned to engage said cutting edge and severed.
3. Apparatus for cutting the thread of bobbins, comprising, in combination, a rotary spindle having a free part adapted to support a bobbin, and a base; and means mounted on said base for rotation with said spindle and including a portion for winding up a thread end of the bobbin and a flange outwardly projecting from said portion located intermediate said portion and said free part of said spindle and having an annular peripheral cutting edge with alternating sharp cutting projections and recesses so that upon doffing of said bobbin the thread portion between said bobbin and the thread end wound up on said portion is tensioned to engage said cutting edge and severed.
4. Apparatus for cutting the thread of bobbins, comprising, in combination, a rotary spindle having a free part adapted to support a bobbin, and a base; and means mounted on said base for rotation with said spindle and including a portion having a roughened annular surface for frictionally engaging and winding up a thread end of the bobbin and 'a flange outwardly projecting from said portion located intermediate said portion and said free part of said spindle and having an annular peripheral cutting edge with alternating sharp cutting projections and recesses so that upon dofling of said bobbin the thread portion between said bobbin and the thread end wound up on said portion is tensioned to engage said cutting edge and severed.
5. Apparatus for cutting the thread of bobbins, comprising, in combination, a rotary spindle having a free part adapted to support a bobbin, and a base; and a tubular means mounted on said base for rotation with said spindle and including a sleeve portion of smaller diameter for winding up a thread end of said bobbin, and a cupshaped portion of greater diameter having an outwardly projecting flange with an annular cutting edge having sharp cutting projections, said flange and cutting edge being located intermediate said portions and said free part of said spindle so that upon dofling of said bobbin the thread portion between said bobbin and the thread end wound up on said portion is tensioned to engage said cutting edge and severed.
6. Apparatus for cutting the thread of bobbins, comprising, in combinations, a rotary spindle having a free part adapted to support a bobbin, and a base; and a tubular means mounted on said base for rotation with said spindle and including a sleeve portion of smaller diameter with a roughened outer annular surface for winding up a thread end of said bobbin, and a cup-shaped portion of greater diameter having an outwardly projecting flange with an annular cutting edge having sharp cutting projections, said flange and cutting edge being located inter: mediate said portions and said free part of said spindle so that upon dofling of said bobbin the thread portion between said bobbin and the thread end wound up on said portion is tensioned to engage said cutting edge and severed.
7. Apparatus for cutting the thread of bobbins, comprising, in combination, a rotary spindle having a free part adapted to support a bobbin, and a base; and a tubular means having a lower first portion mounted on said base and connecting said spindle and said tubular means for rotation, a second higher portion surrounding said base, and a flange on said second portion projecting outwardly from the same and having a peripheral cutting edge located intermediate said first portion and said free part of said spindle, said first portion being adapted to wind up a thread end of the bobbin so that upon doffing of said bobbin the thread portion between said bobbin and the thread end wound up on said first portion is tensioned to engage said cutting edge and severed.
8. Apparatus for cutting the thread of bobbins, comprising, in combination, a rotary spindle having a free part adapted to support a bobbin, and a base; and a tubular means having a lower first portion of smaller diameter mounted on said base and connecting said spindle and said tubular means for rotation, a second higher portion of greater diameter surrounding said base, and a flange on said second portion projecting outwardly from the same and having a peripheral cutting edge with sharp cutting projections located intermediate said first portion and said free part of said spindle, said first portion having an annular outer roughened surface adapted to wind up a thread end of the bobbin so that upon dotfing of said bobbin the thread portion between said bobbin and the thread end Wound up on said first portion is tensioned to engage said cutting edge and severed.

Claims (1)
1. APPARATUS FOR CUTTING THE THREAD OF BOBBINS, COMPRISING, IN COMBINATION, A ROTARY SPINDLE HAVING A FREE PART ADAPTED TO SUPPORT A BOBBIN, AND A BASE; AND MEANS MOUNTED ON SAID BASE FOR ROTATION WITH SAID SPINDLE AND INCLUDING A PORTION FOR WINDING UP A THREAD END OF THE BOBBIN AND A CIRCUMFERENTIAL CUTTING EDGE ARRANGED AND CONSTRUCTED WO THAT UPON DOFFING OF SAID BOBBIN A THREAD
