Description

(No Model.)
- 7 A. LANG av H. OTT
\ SHIRT. Patented D 00. 11, 1883- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A THONY LANG AND-HARRY B. o'rr, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SHIRT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No- 290,069, dated December 11, 1883.
' Application filed March 21, 1883. (N0 model.) I
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ANTHONY LANG and HARRY B. OTT, both, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shirts, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a rear view of a shirt embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section in line as m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of a portion in line y y, Fig. 1. Fig. 4. is a horizontal section of a portion in line z 2, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a view of the lower portion of the back-opening spread out.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Our invention consists of certain improve ments in shirts, whereby their wearing qualities are increased, greater protection is afforded to the shoulders and back of the wearer, and thebottoni of the back-opening of the shirt is re-enforced and strengthened, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the 'body of the shirt; B, the sleeves, and the yoke thereof.
D represents facings on opposite sides of the.
back opening, each of which is sewed to the back of the body at a and joins the yoke, as at a, the sleeve, as at b, and the body along the side line, 0, and bottom termination, d. By this provision the upper portion of the back of the shirt is of double thickness, thus increasing the strength and durability of said portion, and affording greater protection for the shoulders and back of the wearer.
The portion E of the back-facing of one side about the back-opening is known as the placket. Thisportion we make continuousof said facing, and further continue the same, as at E, inwardly, the fold being shown at e, said continuation or edge-facing E being stitched to the portion E, as more readily form the placket and back of the body. The
edge-facing E is continued at the bottom to form a tongue, F, which is turned upwardly and fitted in a pocket, G, which is formed in the back near the back-opening in the side opposite to the placket. The tongue, pocket, and contiguous portion of the back are stitched through, as at f, and thus the bottom of the back-opening is re-enforced and Vastly strengthened, and enabled to endure the strain to which it is subjected.
The additional back-facings D may be secured to the inside or outside of the back of the body, producing in either case two distinct thicknesses of material having the advantages stated.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a shirt, the back-facing of one side of the back-opening, having a continuous placket and an inner fold, and the bottom tongue, in combination with the back-facing of the other side of said opening having a pocket which receives said tongue, the parts being constructed, combined, and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
