UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B..WALSH, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
SCHOOL-SLATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,387, dated May s, 1883.
Application flied May 1,1882. .(No model.) Y
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that-I, JOHN B. WALSH, of the city and county of Providence, and State oi Rhode Island, have invented a new and use- 5 ful Improvement in School-Slates; and'I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompany-ingdrawings, form ing part of this specification.
This invention has reference to an improvement on what are known in the art as noise.
less school-slates, and it consists in a cover for the frame ot' aslate, made of elastic material, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter. 5 The frames ot' school-slates have heretofore beencovered with soft.- material secured to the frame, so that when handled in school it will not scratch the desk, and will not make any noise or sound when laid down or moved on o the desk. Such covering material has been usually rmly secured to the frame ofthe slate, and could not be readily removed from the same when the slate was broken or became otherwise injured.
The object of this invention is to so construct the covering material that the same may be readily removed from the slate and placed on the frame ot' another slate, and be as firmly held as if it were permanently secured 3o thereto.

inner edges of the covering material.
.the material.
lI prefer to make the cover G of'some elastic V material-such as :india-rubber, or a wovenfabric in which india-rubber is interwoven- -so that the' cover can be turned over the frame and will be securely held by the elasticity of made of sufficient elasticity to receive the A knitted fabric may also beframe and be tightly held when drawn overA I the same, as shown inthe drawings. The cover may also be made. of non-elastic material, and provided at one or both edges with elastic'bands or cords d, which, when drawn over the frame, will hold the material tightly on the frame; or, in place ot' the elasticV cords d d, cords or tapes may be inserted at one or both edges into a draw-hem, and when the material is placed. over the frame the tapes or cords may be tied so as to draw the inner edges and secure the covering. A cover of either of these materials or construction may be readily removed from the slate and placed on a new slate, and may thus be used on a number of slates in succession.
I am aware that an elastic slate-frame consisting of an endless tube of vulcanized rub-g JOHN B. -WALSEL Witnesses:
