COMBINED CANE AND PIPE-CASE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,100, dated April 8, 1883.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J. P. WEAVER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Entield,in the county of Halifax and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined (lane and Pipe-Case; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

'lhisinvention has relation to improvements in combined pipe-cases and canes or umbrellahandles; and it has for its object to provide a cheap, safe, and ornamental means for carrying and concealing a long-stemmed pipe in a case attached to and formingapart ot'a cane or umbrella-handle.

The invention consists in the novel organization of a combined cane or its equivalent and a pipe-case, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a. perspective view of my improved pipe-case attached to a walking-stick and closed. Fig. 2 is a view, partly in section, showing the pipecase and part of the tube formed in the attached stick or handle; and Fig. 3 is a sectional View, showing a pipe in the case and stem extending down in the hollow of the stick orhandle.

The letter A represents a walking-stick, made partly or wholly hollow, the tube being formed of any desired length and diameter to receive the stem of a pipe.

Attached by any suitable means to the upper end of this stick is the pipe-case B, formed of the lower piece, a, with downward-extending part b, and the upper or hinged part, c. The lower piece, a, is a shell formed with the downward extension b, having a perforation or hole corresponding to the tube of the cane, and is connected to the stick by screw-threads, cement, or other suitable means. The upper or hinged part, c, of this pipe-case is connected to the lower part by a hinge set at either end or on either side, and is held in closed position and opened by means of a thumb-spring arranged opposite to the hinge.

The pipe-case may be made of wood, iron, brass, nickel, or white-metal, or any other material desired, and finished plain, or engraved, or otherwise ornamented to suit the taste of the artisan-or owner, and the cane or handle may be made of wood or metal, and, as stated, may be wholly or partly hollow.

The use is obvious, and has been already stated. It is to provide a safe and convenient means for carrying a pipe and stem in a walking-cane or umbrella-handle, and its advantages are that while a safe and convenient dc vice is attained for carrying and concealing a pipe and stem the wearer is not scented up, as when carrying the dry pipe loosely about his person and clothing. The user can also at all times have the pleasure of smoking a pipe with along stem, which is generally preferred and always appreciated by smokers.

VVhatI claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with a hollow walkingcane or handle, of a pipe-case consisting of the base-piece a, attached to the upper end of the cane or handle, and the hinged portion 0, and suitable fastening means, the whole so an ranged and constructed as to receive and con cea-l a pipe and its stem, substantially as described.

2. Asa new article of manufacture, the pipecase and attached stem-holder herein described, consisting of the stafif A, case B, formed of the lower piece, a, and hinged part c, with suitable fastening means. a
