LIPTING MACHINE. No. 271,545. Patented J-a.11.30, 1883.
n IINITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY TOWN SEND, OF HADLEY, MICHIGAN.
LlFTlNG-MACHINE.
sPEoIFroA'rioN forming part of. Letters :Patent No. 271,545, dated January 3o, 1883.
Application filed July 5, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY E. ToWNsEND,of Hadley, in the county of Lapeer and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lifting-Machines; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements iu the construction of lifting devices; and the invention consists iu the peculiar construction, arrangement,.and various combinations ofthe parts, all as 4more fully herein after set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, in which my device is shown in perspective, A represents an open link, between the two free ends of which is properly pivoted the yoke B, which is provided with the handles C, said yoke being hung upon the pin D, which passes through the ends of the link A, as shown.
E is a rod, the upper end of which is hung upon the pin F, upon which is also hung the link A. This pin F is secured in the top of any suitable frame. (Not shown.)
Io the lower end of the rod E is loosely secured the clamp-plate G, through the center of which is formed a rectangular oriliee suftciently large, so thatl the said link will easily slide upon the bar H in certain movements of the parts, as hereinafter described. I is a similar clamp-plate, hung by means of a link, J, from the yoke B, and is designed to slip upon the bar H, as above described. The lower end of the bar H is provided with a proper head,
by means of which a chain may be attached to the article to be lifted. By oscillating the handle and yoke the clamp-plates G I will alternately slide upon the bar H, the clamp G holding the bar iu its raised position, while the clamp I slides down to take another hold.
The operation of the device is so simple that a further description thereof is deemed un necessary.
It will be seen that bythe construction here shown a frame to support the apparatus is unnecessary, as the link A and suspended rod E may be hung upon a hook or any projecting bar wherever it may be desired to use the implement; or it may be suspended by a chain or rope passing through the link A` and the eye of the bar E, in the same manner as the pin F is now passed.
I am aware of the Patent No. 166,384, and I do nottherefore broadly claim clamps adapted to raise a bar bythe action of a lever connected to said clamps.
In a lifting device, the combination of the suspending-link A and suspended rod E, both constructed to receive a device forsupportin g them, and the rodE carrying the holding-clamp Gr, with the lever C, having ayoke, B, pivoted to said link A, the link J, clampsIG,and har H, passing through yoke B and clamps I G, all constructed and arranged substantially as described.
