C. STUTQ clamping Devices.

UNITED STATES PATENT Orrrca.
- CHARLES STOUT, OF WAVERLY HEIGHTS, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND CLINTON RORER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLAMPING DEVICES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,931, dated J une 17, 1873 application filed March 12, 1873.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known, that I, CHARLES STOUT, of
Y Waverly Heights, Montgomery county, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Clamping Devices, of which the following is a specification The object of my invention is to enable fence-rails and other objects to be securely clarnped and held while working upon the same; and I acoomplish this object by combining a strong metal frame, A, shown in the perspective view Figure 1, and elevation Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawing, with a lever, B, hong to the said frame, and so acted on by a weight or spring as to secnrely hold and clanip the rail or other object X between the same and the frame, when the latter is attached to a postor other fixed object, Y, as shown. Y
The frame A consists of two side pieces, a, a, arranged with points or teeth b b, and connected together by rods d and d ,to the former of which is hung a yoke, e, in such a manner that it can freely turn thereon, while to the latter is hung loosely a curved arm, f, perforated with a series of holes, g, into any one of which can be inserted acurved pin, h, secured to the lever B, the latter being armed with a tooth, i, upon the upper edge of its. short arm opposite the teeth b of frame.
In using the clamp, the yoke e is slipped over a post or stake, Y, driven into the ground, and the rail or other object X, which it is desired to hold, is then adjusted to a position betwcn the under side of the frame A and upper side of the lever, with one edge resting against the post, as shown in Fig. 2, after which a weight is suspended from the long arm of the lever, or the latter is held down by a spring or otherwise, so as to cause the rail to be tightly clamped between the said lever and frame, and held as firmly as though in a vise.
My invention has been designed especially for the purpose of holding fenoe-rails in any desired position during the operation of pointing or flattening the ends of the same,, and for such irregular objects as rails. The teeth b and 43, which bite into their opposite sides, are a necessity; but if the clamp is to be used for holding posts or other comparatively flat and smooth objects, the said teeth might be dispensed with but it will be preferable, generally, to employ them.
The pin or hook h of the lever can be fitted to any of the holes g in the arm f of the frame, according to the required position of the fulcrum, which will depend upon the size and shape of the object to be clamped.
It will be seen that the rail or other object is securely clamped between the lever and the fran1e and does not depend for support upon the post, which serves only as a fixed point upon which to hang the frame.
I do not claim broadly a clamping device consisting of a lever and a link connected to a post; but I claimlhe combination with the lever B of a frame, A, between which and the lever a rail or other object may be clamped, as set forth.
lu testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing wtnesses.
CHARLES STOUT.
