LIFTINGDEVIGE. I N0. 601,631. PatentedApr. 5, 1898.

NIIED AES LIFTING DEVICE.
$PEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 601,631, dated April .5, 1898.
Application filed February 2,1897. Serial No. 621,617. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. B. CLEMM, a citizen of the United States, residing at P0- cahontas, in the county of Tazewell and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting Devices, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to lifting devices such as are usually employed in removing various articles from shelves in stores and other places; and the object of the invention is to provide an improved-device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and also comparatively inexpensive, while being well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accon1panying drawings forma part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improvement, and Fig. 2 a plan view thereof.
In the practice of my invention I provide a lifter of the class herein specified which consists of two similar bars or handles 5 and 6, one of which is provided with guides 7 ,through which the other is passed, and in the construction shown in the drawings the guides 7 are secured to the bar or handle 5, and the bar or handle 6 is passed therethrough.
Connected with the upper end of the bar or handle 5 in any desired manner is. a plate or jaw 8, which projects at right angles thereto, and the bar or handle 6 is provided at its upper end with a similar plate or jaw 9, which is secured thereto in any desired manner and which projects at right angles therefrom above and parallel with the jaw 8 to a point near. the end thereof, said jaws being provided with sharpened ends. The upper end of the bar or handle 6 is also provided with a yokeshaped hook or loop 10', and the plate or jaw 8 and the handle 5 are also connected by a diagonal brace 11, which gives strength thereto.
connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.
In practice the lower end of the bar or handle 5 is grasped in one hand, and the handle 6 is manipulated with the other, being moved upwardly and downwardly through the guides 7, and when thus operated or manipulated the jaws or plates 8 and 9 may be made to grasp and hold a bolt of cloth, so as to remove the same from a shelf, as will be readily understood, and they may also be operated so as to remove various other articles from shelves and also to place such articles on the shelves. The hook 10 may also be employed for removing articles provided with handles from shelves and for placing said articles thereon.
This device is simple in construction and operation and well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
In practice I prefer to connect with the upper ends of the handles or bars 5 6 crossheads 12, to which the plates or jaws 8 and 9 are secured; but this feature is not essential, and the plates or jaws may be secured directly to the handles or bars, if desired.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The herein-described lifting device comprising two similar bars one of which is provided with keepers through which the other is adapted to slide, cross-heads mounted upon the upper end of each of said bars, angularly-projecting plates secured to each of said cross-heads each of said plates being rectangular in form and being semicircular at the free end, the free end of each plate being beveled on one side, each being beveled on the side opposite to the other, the said plates being substantially the same length whereby the said under plate projects beyond the said upper plate at the end thereof, and a brace ence of the subscribing witnesses, this 28th day of January, 1897.
WILLIAM T. B. OLEMM.
