UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CAMERON MGC. SIMMONS, OF'CLAIBORNE, ALABAMA.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 264,351, dated September 12, 1882.
1 I Application filed July 18,1882. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CAMERON MUG. SIM- MONS, of Claiborne, in the county of Monroe and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad-to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an interchangeable plow, cultivator, and planting device; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
The object of this invention is to produce a frame and interchangeable devices which will allow the implement to be converted at will into an ordinary plow and colter, a double plow, a double-shoveled cultivator, or a seedcoverer, each construction allowing adjustments to accommodate difierent widths of rows or drills. Many devices looking to the same end have been proposed.
The feature of the present invention consists in cheapness, simplicity, ease of manufacture, ready adjustment, and general efficiency in service of the device as an entirety.
To these endslthe invention consists essentially in an ordinary plow-beam to which are rigidly secured convenient handles and a proper standard. Within a recess located at the base of the standard is removably secured a cross-beam having slots near either extremity, in which operate securing-bolts which adjustably affix cultivator-shovels to said cross-beam.
The plow-beam is provided with a recess, in which is adjustably secured a transverse arm carrying an auxiliary standard which is braced to the forward end of the plow-beam. This auxiliary standard is adapted to carry a removable plow or shovel, and may be set ad- 5 jacent to or farther from the plow-beam, as
of the colter-wheel to accommodate the par-.
ticular use to which the device may be directed or employed.
The invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view with the cultivators in operation, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same.
A represents the plow-beam, to which are secured the handles B, and C the main standard. In the plow-beam A is formed recess a, in which operates the transverse arm D of the auxiliary frame, said arm being provided with a series of holes, (1, and adapted to be secured to the beam A by bolts or pins d in such a manner as to increase or lessen the space between the line of travel of the main standard 0 and the auxiliary standard E at will, or as occasion may require. A brace, F, secures the auxiliary standard to the main beam, as shown. At the base of the main standard 0 is formed a recess, 0, in which is removably secured the cross-beam H, having slotsh. In these slots, by belts or other securing device, are removably secured cultivator-shovels, coverers, or drill-plows I, these devices being interchangeable at'will and laterally adjustable to suit difi'erent widths of rows or drills.
K represents the standards for an interchangeable colter or drill-wheel, said standards being provided with a series of perforations, 70, which allow the vertical adjustment of said colter or'wheel L to accommodate the use to which the device is being diverted.
For instance, if a drill-wheel is employed, coverers will be secured to the cross-beam H. If a plow is employed, the colter will be inserted and either drill-wheel or colter may be adjusted to suit the occasion.
The bolt f, which secures the auxiliary standard-brace F to the forward end of the plowbeam, is of sufficient length to allow the auxiliary standard to be adjusted away from the main standard, and the line of travel to remain unchanged by inserting washers between the parts F A.
What I claim as new is- The combination, with the main beam A,
having recess a, and the main standard 0, In testimony that I claim the foregoing as having recess 0, of the cross-bar H, having my own I have hereunto affixed my signature 10 slots h, the laterally-adjustable arm D, having in presence of two witnesses. perforations d, the auxiliary standard E, and t m standards K, having perforations 7c, the whole CAMERON MOOASKUJ' EIMMOM constructed and adapted to serve with inter- YVitnesses: changeable devices substantially as and for AUGUSTUS \VIGG-INs, the purposes set forth.
