IMPROVEMENT IN SULKV-PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,440, dated March 30, 1875; application filed December 5, 1874.
. To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWIN ROBERTSON, of Fairmount, in the county of Vermillion, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Sulky-Plows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a plan view of my plow, and Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, part sectional. Figs. 3 and 4 are detailed views.
This invention has relation to sulky-plows, wherein the driver is mounted on a seat which is supported upon the axle of two transporting-wheels, one of which is a land-wheel, and the other a furrow-wheel.
My invention consists in a rigid plow-beam, which is adjustably pivoted to a clip on the front beam of the draft-frame, in combination with a diagonal side brace, which is rigidly secured to said beam and adjustably pivoted at its front end to a standard on the draft-frame, whereby the plow is free to rise and descend, and the plow can be adjusted for sloping or hill-side land.
In the annexed drawings, A designates the axle of two transporting-wheels, one of which, B, is the land-wheel, and the other, B, is the furrow wheel. To this axle A three beams, 0 G 0 and a draft-pole, D, are rigidly secured, and to the front ends of the beams O C O a cross-beam, G is rigidly secured, thus forming a draft-frame, to which a triple-tree, E, is attached. The draftpole D is applied on the furrow side of the draft-frame, and the triple-tree E is connected to bar (3 at the middle of the length thereof. G designates a rigid plow-beam, which is connected to a clip, a, by means of a horizontal pivot-bolt, b, so that the rear end of this beam G can vibrate vertically. The clip a has a row of holes in it for receiving the bolt 1), and allowing the front end of the beam G to be adjusted and set higher or lower, as may be required. G designates a brace for resisting lateral strain on the plow H. This-brace is secured on the land-side of the beam G, near the rear end thereof, and extends forward in a diagonal direction to a standard, 6, on the front end of the longitudinal beam 0 to which standard the brace G is connected by a pivotbolt, f. The standard 6 has a row of perforations in it to receive the pivot-bolt f, and allow the front end of the brace G to be adjusted and set higher or lower, as may be required; The rigidity of the brace G is maintained by means of a cross-brace, G The plow-beam G extends over the axle A, and is supported upon a curved lifter, g, by means of an ant -friction roller, h. The lifting-arm gis secured on a rock-shaft, c, supported in bearings on the axle A, and having a hand-lever, J, secured on one end, which lever is convenient to a person sitting in a seat, S. An arched rack, K, will hold the plow at any desired height by engaging the lever J with its teeth. The plow-standard H is rigidly secured to the beam G by means of a staplebolt, j, and an inclined bar, L, and in front of this plow is a circular, rotating colter, N, for clearing the plow, and cutting freely through the sod.
It will be seen from the above description that the plow can be leveled for running in flat land, and that it can be inclined toward the right or left for hill-side plowing.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The straight and stiff plowbeam G, in combination with the diagonal brace G both pivoted and vertically adjustable by the means and for the purpose described.
