WITNESSES E. RITZ & A. GKRTNER.
SHUTTER FASTBNER.
Patented Aug. 8, 1882.
ATTORNB NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDUARD RITZ AND ADOLPH GARTNER, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.-
SHUTTER-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 262,319, dated August 8, 1882.
Application filed July 1. 18853.
To cl Z whom it may concern Be it known that we, EDUARD RITZ and ADoLPH GARTNER, both of J erseyGity, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Im provements in Shutter-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved device for connecting and locking shutters, so that they cannot be opened from the outside; and the invention consists of fixed clampingarms, which extend laterally from a center shank, and of an axially-movable binding piece or bridge, which is capable of being applied to the adjoining side rails of the shutters by a clamping device, so as to lock them together.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 represent top views of our improved shutter-fastening device, showing it respectively before being clamped and after being clamped to the shutters. Fig. 3 is a top view of the device as detached, with the inner binding piece or bridge at rightangles to the outer arms.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the center shank of our improved shutter-fastening device, which shank is provided at the outer end with laterally-extending arms B B, having pointed spurs or inwardly-bent ends b, so as to press into the Wood of the vertical meeting-rails of the shutter or extend around the same. The inner end of the shank A is provided with a handle, G. The shank A, outer arms, B B, 'and inner handle, '0, are preferably made of two pieces of wire, which are twisted together at the shank portion, as shown in the drawings, so as to be manufactured as cheaply as possible, though any other mode of construction may be used. To the shank A is loosely applied, by means of a center eye, (7, an inner binding piece or bridge, D, the arms of which extend in diametrically-opposite direction from the shank A, and which is bent outwardly at right angles at the ends, so as to embrace the meeting-rails of the shutters from the inside.
To apply the fastening device to the shutters the adjoining rails of the shutters are either recessed for the shank A or the shank is simply placed between the same, as shown (No model.)
in Fig. 1. The outer arms, B, of the shank A are then placed in horizontal position, which is readily indicated by the inner handle, 0, that is arranged so as to extend in the same direction from the shank as the arms B. The inner loosely-turning binding piece or bridge, D, is next applied from the inside to the meeting-rails of the shutters, and then the outer arms, B, and the inner piece, D, tightly secured thereto by means of a clamping thumbnut, E, that turns on the threaded shank A, so as to secure thereby the fastening device tightly to the shutter-rails or release it therefrom, as desired.
The clamping thumb-nut E is made of castiron, while the other parts of the fastener are preferably bent of galvanized wire of suitable thickness.
The fastener may thus be furnished very cheaply and form a convenient device to be used in connection with shutters of basementwindows as a kind of safety device in cases when a reliable locking device is to be used or when the common shutter-fasteners are out of order, so as to do away with the unsightly cords with which shutters are usually fastened. The fastening device is also of advantage to keep the shutters rigidly connected, so as to prevent rattling, it forming a cheap and readily-applied means for securely holding the shutters in closed position, either in connection with the common shutter-fasteners or in place of the same when they are worn out by use.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A shutter-fastening device consisting of a threaded shank, A, having laterally-extending outer arms, B, and an inner handle, G, of a movable binding piece or bridge, D, and of a clamping thumb-nut, E, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as EDUARD RI TZ. ADOLPH GABTNER.
