UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE@ PATRICK MOCAULEY, OF BRADDOGK, PENNSYLVANIA.
sAsH-LocK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 636,729, dated November "i, 1899.
Application led December 7, 1898. Serial No. 698,512. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PATRICK MCCAULEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Braddock, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Sash Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in window-sash locks.
The invention relates particularly to that `class of sash-locks which are adapted to be secured to the mid-rail of a sash and to fasten the two sashes together at this point.
Briey described, myinvention consists of a rectangular' plate which is provided with an elongated slot and has a keeper formed integral with one face. Secured to the plate is a flat spring-catch, the one end of which is bent at right angles .and protrudes through the elongated slot in the plate to engage a plate connected to the mid-rail of the engaging sash, all of which construction will be hereinafter more specifically described and then particularly claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like figures of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views, i which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a part of `a window-frame and the sash, with my improved fastener secured in position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my improved fastener; and Fig. 3 is a similar view of the plate which is secured to the engaging mid-rail and adapted to receive the spring-catch of the fastener.
To put my invention into practice, I provide a plate l, which is preferablyrectangular in form, as shown, and is provided near one end with an elongated opening or slot 2, and is further provided with apertures 3 to receive fastening-screws or other means for securing the mid-rail i of the sash. Connected to one side of the plate, preferably about midway thereof, is a keeper 5, which is preferably cast integral with the plate, as shown, by means of a suitable core arranged in a mold, which is removed from between l[he keeper and plate after casting. Pivotally secured to the plate near its one end is a spring-catch 6, which has itsr free end bent at right angles to the pivoted end and extendving through the elongated slot or opening 2.
Secured to the mid-rail 7 of the engaging sash is a plate 8, having a central opening 9 to receive the protruding or free end of springcatch, and is further provided with apertures 10 near each end to receive screws or other fastening means for securing to the said midrail 7. For the purpose of holding the free end of the spring-catch normally in engagement with the plate 8 I secure to the inner face of the keeper 5 and to the outer face of the spring-catch a coil-spring 11, the tension of which serves to keep the said catch in engagement.
A suflicient grip may be obtained upon the catch to release the same and allow the operation of the window-sash by gripping the catch at the point where it is bent to form the protruding end, and when this end has been withdrawn from engagement with 8 the sash may each be moved as desired.
' Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A window-sash lock consisting of a plate provided with an elongated slot and a keeper formed integral therewith, a spring-catch having its one end pivotally secured to said plate and its other end bent at right angles and extending through the elongated slot in the plate, a coil-spring arranged between said spring-catch and keeper, and a separate plate having an aperture formed therein to receive the free end of said spring-catch,substantial1y as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
PATRICK MCCAULEY. Witnesses:
JOHN C. F. JONES, J. M. CLIFFORD.
