This invention relates to new and improved hair curling devices, this application relating to an improvement on our Patent No. 2,473,957, issued June 21, 1949.

The principal object of the invention resides in the provision of a new .and improved hair curling device comprising a molded plastic body approximately the size and shape of a finger and tapering correspondingly thereto, said body being provided with a spiral groove on the surface thereof, said groove increasing in pitch and depth from the smaller end of the hair curlin device to the wider end thereof so as to facilitate the winding of a lock of hair thereon; in combination with a rotatable collar or the like at the wider end of the device, said collar being provided with a slot for holding a pair of ears on a hold down device so as to rotatably mount the hold down device to the body, said hold down device being also pivoted thereto on an axis transverse to the length of the hair curling device and being adapted to overlie the body and hold the curled hair thereto.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.

Fig. 1 is an exploded view illustrating all of the separate parts of the device in dis-assembled relation;

Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation showing the device assembled;

Fig. 3 is an enlarged view in elevation showing the collar; and

Fig. 4. is an enlarged sectional view taken through the collar and showing how the hold down device is secured thereto.

In carrying out the present invention there is provided a body generally indicated at l and having the general size and shape of a finger tapering correspondingly thereto. Said finger is provided with a continuous spiral groove from end to end thereof, said groove being smaller of pitch and shallower at the small end of the body and gradually deepened and increasing in pitch to the wider end thereof as is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

The purpose of this construction is to provide relatively small grooves for initiating the winding of a lock of hair on the body [0 at the small end thereof. As the body It is then rotated in the fingers, the lock of hair gradually growing thicker as the scalp is approached, finds accommodation in the widening and deepening groove of the body I 0.

The body I0 terminates in a flange I2 and at this end thereof is provided with a central longitudinal recess M. A cap generally indicated at It fits over the flange 12, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, by reason of a cooperating flange 18. The collar [6 is provided with a cross slot 20 in the center of which there is a hole or recess 24 corresponding to that at M and alined therewith.

A hold down device generally indicated at 25 is provided at one end with a pair of inturned ears 28 receivable in the groove 20 one at each side of the center hole 24. The collar I6 rotates on the body In and the hold down device 26 swings on the collar [6 in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 2 so as to overlie the lock of hair wound on the body H). The hold down device 26 is provided with a depending lug 30 which snaps into a small recess 32 at the small end of the body 10.

A plastic rivet generally indicated at 34 and having a head 36 and a shank 38 extends between ears 28 through hole 24 and into the recess M where it is closely held, the collar [6 rotating on the shank 38.

It will be seen that this invention presents a very effective hair curling device which is extremely easy to use for its intended purpose, the same being held with the wider end of the tapered body In in one hand, the other hand being utilized to initiate the wrapping around of a lock of hair at the end thereof, the tapered body then being rotated and the groove receiving the lock of hair in tightly wound condition there-on. When the device is then wound up close to the scalp the operator merely snaps down the hold down device 26 and the curl is held in position as long as desired.

Having thus described our invention and the advantages thereof, we do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but what I claim A hair curling and waving device comprising a tapered body, a rotatable collar thereon, a swinging hair hold down device, a pair of inturned ears on the latter, said collar having an open recess receiving the ears, means secured to the body and overlying said recess and collar to hold the latter and the hold down device to the body, said means comprising a headed rivet and a shank on the rivet, the shank passing through the collar and between the ears and into the body, the hold down device being tapered correspondingly to the body, means to latch the hold down device to the body at the narrow end thereof, the hold down [device being spaced from the body, the spacing increasing from the narrow end of the body to the wider end thereof, the body being spirally grooved on an increasing pitch from the narrow to the wide end.
