Description

Patented June 24, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HAIR CURLER Paul Bonneau, Utica, N. Y.
Application March 28, 1950, Serial N 0. 152,466
2 Claims. (01. 132-36.?!)
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in hair curlers and more particularly to a wet curler containing a heat composition and about which the hair is wrapped and held while becoming set.
An important object of the invention is to provide an envelope of flexible material for containing the heat composition and which may be rolled into a substantially cylindrical shape for wrapping the hair thereon and also providing water-proof sheets between which the hair is held while being wrapped and retained until the moisture contained in the curler evaporates and the hair is dried.
A further object is to provide a hair curler of simple and practical construction, easy to install in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the curler ready for wrapping the hair;
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the hair partially wrapped; and
Figure 3 is a similar view showing the hair completely wrapped and with the wire ties in locked position.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein, for the purpose of illustration, I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates an envelope of tin foil or other impervious, non-soluble material containing a suitable heat generating chemical 6 which, when placed in contact with water, will generate suflicient heat to impart a so-called permanent wave in a pre-formed strand of hair wrapped about the envelope. The envelope is perforated, as shown at I, for the escape of heated gases therefrom.
The envelope is rolled in cylindrical form about a twisted bendable wire tie 8 which forms a core for the roll and the ends of the tie extend outwardly beyond the ends of the roll and are formed with finger-gripping loops 9.
The strands of hair III are placed on laminated wrapping sheets composed of outer water-proof paper sheets II and I2 and a center sheet of tin foil l3, and the laminated sheets of paper and tin foil with the hair placed thereon are then wrapped as a unit about the rolled envelope 5 and the ends of ties 8 bent inwardly over the wrapped hair and twisted together as shown at I 4 to hold the hair in its wrapped position.
Envelope 5 is moistened before wrapping the hair thereon andthe hair is kept moist by paper sheets II and I2 and heat generated by the chemical in the envelope is retained by tin foil sheet l3 to thus produce a so-called permanent wave in the hair which holds its shape after the moisture in the envelope evaporates and the hair becomes dry.
The paper sheets H and 12 also aid in keeping the tin foil sheet smooth while wrapping the hair.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the claimed as new is:
1. A hair curler comprising a perforated envelope of impervious non-soluble material containing a heat generating chemical and rolled to form a cylindrical body, a bendable wire core on which the envelope is rolled to form the body and projecting from each end thereof to provide a pair of bendable ties, and a wrapping of laminated water-proof sheets on which strands of hair are placed and wrapped therewith about the envelope forming the body, the wrappings being held on said envelope by said bendable ties.
2. A hair curler according to claim 1, wherein said wrapping comprises separate outer water proof sheets and an intermediate heat retaining sheet.
