SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,604, dated May 30, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE F. RICHARD- SON, of Montague, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bureaus and Similar Gase-VVork, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in bureaus and otherlike articles of case-work in which sliding drawers are used; and the object ofmyinvention is to dispense with the use of such sliding drawers, and to construct the article in such a manner as to admitof its being ornamentally finished on the exterior with panel-work, &c., and also. to admit of the application of drapery on the front and sides of the exterior, if desired.

The invention consists of a series of receptacles or compartments having the capacity of drawers, a port-ion of such receptacles being attached to the inner side of the front piece or door and the other portion to a stationary casing. The said front piece is hinged at one side or end to the casing, so as to open freely, and when the two parts are closed together, the receptacles being arranged alternately on opposite sides, each receptacle will occupy the space between those on the opposite side.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of an open bureau embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same with the two portions closed together.

A is the stationaryportion of a casing, having the ends E extending across the greater portion of the width of the article.

B is a movable portion hinged to the stationary portion at or about the middleof one end.

To the movable portion B are attached the compartments or receptacles O G, and to the stationary portion A is attached a similar receptacle, l), of which there may be one or more on each side. The receptacles are arranged with spaces between each, so that when the two portions A and B are closed together each receptacle will fit in the opposite space, as indicated in Fig. 2. The receptacles O D are composed of thick pasteboa-rd or some thin wood, the front, bottom, and rear beingin one piece and rounded, as shown in Fig. 2, and attached at the rear end, as shown at H, to the front and rear portions of the article,the front end of the receptacle being secured to a bar, F, and the ends to pieces 1 l. The lower receptacle, D, of the stationary portion A is shown as made with square corners; but they may be rounded, if desired. The lower outer end of the movable portion B is provided with a caster, G, to prevent it from sagging and admit of its being readily swung open. It will thus be seen that the several compartments may be readily filled with such articles as required, and when closed the movable portion may be locked, one key answering the purpose,

and when opened each compartinentis readily,

accessible.

By this construction I obviate the difficulties attending'the use of sliding drawers, such as the tendency to stick, and requiring carein drawing out both ends at once, and other obvious objections. The article occupies no more room when closed than the ordinary one when provided with drawers. It also admits of ornamentation on the front and sides, when desirable, and it may also be finished with drapery.

The construction may be applied to bureaus, commodes, and other articles of case-work where sliding draw'ers are now used, and in their place.

WVhat I claim as my invention is- The combination, in a bureau or other similar article of case-work, of receptacles or compartments arranged alternately on opposite sides, so that when opened the contents of each receptacle will be readily accessible, and

when closed the spaces between each receptaole will be filled by the opposite receptacles, substantially as specified.
