Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EZRA'DURAND, OF CHELSEA, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVED WARDROBE.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 38,473, dated May 12, 1863.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EZRA DURAND, of Chelsea, in the county ofWashtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wardrobes 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section of my invention when expanded or open, the line Fig. 2, indicating the plane of section. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same when closed, the plane of section being indicated by the line y y, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference in both views indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to combine with` a wardrobe, bureau, or other similar piece of furniture a clothes-drier or device for airing the clothes contained in said wardrobe or bureau.
The invention consists in combining with the movable side or end board of a wardrobe or bureau a series of bars connected together on the principle oflazy-tongs in such a manner that on drawing out said movable side or end board the lazy-tongs are expanded and a large amount of hangingroom is provided for the purpose of airing the clothes contained in the wardrobe or bureau, or for the purpose of drying the clothes before they are put away; the whole being so arranged that it can be closed up with the clothes hanging on the cross-bars of lazy-tongs, leaving nothing visi ble in the room but a nice'piece of furniture.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
A represents a wardrobe, which may be constructed in any desirable manner and size, and which may be provided with shelves c, or with drawers, if desired. This wardrobe is divided in two compartments, b c, by a partition, d-one compartment to contain the shelves or drawers and the other the drying or airing device B. This device consists of wo series of bars or slats, e, connected together on the principle of lazy-tongs', and provided with cross-bars f to receive the clothes to be' dried or aired. The end bars, 6*, are pivoted to the stationary back part of the wardrobe A, and the opposite end bars, ci, are pivoted to flanges or lugs g, projecting from the inner surface of the movable end board, h, ofthe wardrobe. This board rests on separate legs or rollers, and it is providedA with a handle or knob, i, so that it can conveniently be drawn out when desired. When closed up, said end board is fastened by buttons j. By drawing out the end board, h, the lazy-tongs e expand and a large amount of hanging-room is obtained on the cross-bars f. The clothes contained in the wardrobe can thus be aired whenever it may be desirable, or the clothes can be dried before they are placed into the Wardrobe.
By referring to Fig. 2 it will be noticed that the slats e are somewhat wider than the length of the diameter of the cross-bars j', and whenvtlie lazy-tongs are closed up, spaces k exist between the adjoining cross-bars. The object of this construction is to allow of closing up the lazytongs with the clothes on. The wardrobe may thus be placed in a good room and the clothes hung up on the lazy-tongs, and in case ofa surprise by visitors the end board, h, is closed up with all the clothes on the cross-barsf, and nothing can be seen in the room but a nice piece of furniture.
It is obvious that the device for airing or drying clothes can be attached to ,either end or side, and the wardrobe can be made high or low and in any desirable form or shape, and it can be set on casters, so that it can be conveniently moved from one place to another.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as an improved article of manufacture- A A wardrobe provided with an attached clothesdryin g device, made and operating as herein shown and described.
EZRA DURAND.
