STOVE.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, DAvID G. STAFFORD, of the city of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Heating and Ventilating Coal-Stoves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a perspective outside view of the stove; Fig. 2, an enlarged view of the smoke pipe and self regulating ventilator; Fig. 3, the fire-pot of the stove with sheet iron incasement; Fig. 4, the sectional view of the stove; and Fig. 5, an underside view of the bottom plate of the stove.
'Ihe nature of my invention consists in combining a self-regulating valve applied to the smoke iue or pipe of a coal stove as hereinafter described with an air flue surrounding the fire box and open to the room at the bottom of the stove as shown and fully set forth in the following description.
The stove may be made in any of forms well known in the trade and in use for warming apartments. The fire-pot being placed in the center and surrounded by a sheet iron inclosure (A) which forms the' external surface of the stove. The lire pot (B) may be made by placing fire-brick (C) within a cast or sheet iron drum, or the pot may be made of cast iron alone.
(D) represents the grate bars at the lower part of the re pot; (E), the drawer for ashes beneath the grate; (F), the heating chamber over the fire; (G), the downward flue surrounding the fire pot through which the products of combustion pass to the smoke pipe n The upper edge of the fire pot (B) 1s surrounded by a circular chamber (I) having a large number of small perforations through the inner plate (J for admitting air to the fire pot over the burning coal, the object being the more perfect consumption of the combustible gases. The fire pot (B) is surrounded by a cylinder (K) made of sheet iron which forms a circular space (L) between the fire pot and the cylinder (K), which space communicates with ring (I) at the top of the fire pot, and extends downward through the extreme bottom of the stove as shown at (M).

(P) is a swing valve attached by a pivot (R) to the plate (N). The position of the valve (P) is regulated by the thumb screw (S) which passes through the iron plate, and rests against the brass plate (O).
(T) is an opening in the smoke flue to be opened or closed by the valve The operation of the invention is as fol lows. The main draft of air to the fire is through the grate in the ordinary manner, and the products of combustion pass first into the chamber (F) over the fire pot, thence through the openings (U) into the downward flue (K) into the base of the stove, thence upward into the smoke pipe (H). The draft of the stove causes small jets of air to pass into the upper part of the fire pot through the perforated ring (J) which effects the perfect combustion of the gases from the burning coal. This inlet of air is supplied to the ring (I) by the circular flue (L) which surrounds the iire pot, and opens through the bottom of the stove, receiving its supply of air from the lower part of the room. The object of passing the air (which supplies the perforated ring) through the circular Hue surrounding the fire pot, is, that it may become highly heated before being driven into Contact with the heated 0ases to be burned, it being found that combustion is more perfect when heated instead of cold air is admitted over the fire.
The regulator is so arranged that after being properly adjusted by the thumb screw, the valve will remain closeduntil the heat of the stove is as high as desirable, when the brass plate becomes expanded more than the iron plate to which it is attached, which expansion causes it to curve slightly, thereby operating the valve and opening the smoke flue with the room, and admittinga current of air directly into the pipe; the effect of this operation being to lessen indirectly the draft of the stove, and at the. same time to partially ventilate the room.
I do not claim the use of a perforated ring or chamber around the top of the lire pot of coal stoves, for the admission of air to ignite the gases passing from the burning coal; I am aware that metallic expansion regulators are in common use for cutting off the supply of air to the fire by closing the draft hole when the Stove is too highly air flue surrounding the fire box constructed heated. I therefore do not claim that device as described, the Whole arranged substan- 10 as my invention, but tially as stated.
